Thanx Cherub. Yeah, as soon as I see the concert I'll write up a review (but by that time heaps of people would've written one, so maybe the novelty might have worn off? ) How good would that be if you get to go backstage?! One of my friend's-sister's-friends gets to go backstage for the Perth concert...how lucky is she? I can't even remember why she gets to go though! Anyway thankyou again for such an amazing review...it has fueled my excitement for the concert all over again, hee hee! ;D

AURORAB,
I bought the CD "Introducing the Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby" locally yesterday and have been listening to it since. I really like it. Couldn't get Sign Your Name out of my head, and hearing it again transported me back to an earlier period in my life! I read that Introducing the Hardline... sold over 8 million copies. Unbelievable.
I can see what you mean about his higher register sounding like Guy's, although TTD's voice is more 'gravelly' down low than Guy's imo. I noticed they also have a similar sort of 'huskiness' in their voices too in some respects. I hope this makes sense, as I'm no music officianado! Their styles of music seem similar too, Guy is forming a funky band of his own shortly. The songs were all quite different from each other on TTD's album though. I liked the variety, and TTD is certainly very talented if he writes all his own stuff and plays some instruments too. I thought Guy's song "No More" which won him the Pilot Pens competition was very good too. Guy's mum wanted him to learn violin, but he only learned one song and played it over and over at family functions. I think the violin has been ditched, but Guy's mum also said he got a guitar when he was 3yo and took it to bed with him! The guitar playing is still around.
On TTD's album, I particularly liked the song Let's Go Forward (with our love) and could really hear and see Guy singing that one. That was the track I thought sounded most like Guy's voice, obviously because TTD sings it up higher than some of the other tracks. I noticed similarities in most other songs too, especially in If You All Go To Heaven. This song would suit Guy, and it also ties in with his Christian belief system. Bluesy Who's Loving You would suit Guy too.
I haven't downloaded and listened to the other 5 songs you listed from TTDs later CDs yet, but will do so soon.
Thanks again for directing me to TTD, or Senanda Meitraya as he is also known. Its been a pleasure.
PS I had to post as Cherubic rather than Cherub because a password has never arrived in my email Inbox when I tried to register as a member under the Cherub username. I know I got my email adress right though. So I don't know what has happened.

This is a great thread - 3 days to go til the Perth concert and I can't wait. Don't worry Cherub, I'm 37 and have been a bit of a worry to my family since Guy appeared and blew me away, nothing wrong with going back to your teenage years !
Terrance Trent D'Arby is fantastic, such a soulful voice - especially on Introducing The Hardline and Guy definately has some similarities to him, glad your enjoying his music. I agree that his music takes you back, I was back in London when it came out and it always reminds me of that time - but at the same time it's timeless.
Thanks everyone for the reviews, I'll post my own when I've been on Saturday nite.

Thanks Spririt,
I feel a lot better knowing there are some 'older' posters on this board who also love Guy. My age was one of the reasons I 'lurked' here for about ten weeks before AURORAB prompted me into posting about the Newcastle concert. I was bursting to post by then.
When TTDs Sign Your Name was a hit I remember I had just moved back home after a broken engagement (at only 19 or 20yo). OMG what on earth was I thinking back then. Alas, you can't put an old head on young shoulders.
I must confess that I have only been to one other music concert in my life apart from AI, and that was in around 1990 when Phil Collins did his But Seriously tour. (Amen to anonymity on message boards)! He is the only other singer apart from Guy that I have ever been totally mad on, but I am far more obsessed with Guy than I ever was with Phil Collins. Guy is just unique, a class act and in a league of his own imo. My hubby thinks, (apart from the fact that I have completely lost it), that TTD sounds exactly like the lead singer from LondonBeat. I think they sang "I've Been Thinkin' About You" a while ago. I'm not so sure. TTD also has a bit of a Bob Marley influence I thought, but maybe its just his dreadlocks that makes me think that way.
I hope you enjoy the Perth concert Spirit and look forward to seeing your take on it. Is Perth a bit of a "Shannon town" too, like Newcastle is - as Kaz mentioned in an earlier post? Disappointingly, the more I talk to people around here, the more I find that Kaz is right.
While Newcastle is evolving into more white collar industries, it is essentially a working class town as it has it roots in primary industry - steel (BHP) and coal exports (rather than growing up "off the sheep's back"). Although surrounding areas are rural. I think that heritage is still embedded deep in Newcastle's psyche, and that is why a lot of people around here identify with Shannon moreso than Guy. Shannon represents that whole working class/ toiling battler, and mateship image that Australia's national identity was founded on. Guy represents a more modern image of 'multicultural' Australia. Sorry to bore you with the social commentary, I just like trying to nut out why people voted the way they did, aside from musical stuff. Though I don't know what I'd say if Cosima won or came second!!
My apologies to Shannon fans in advance, but imo while Shannon is good-looking and sounds okay, and I really liked his and Cosima's duet at the concert, he just doesn't do anything for me. The fact that he can't dance very well in songs that are upbeat really gets to me because I can't get into enjoying the song when he can't perform it. He did move around a bit more in his Let's Drive song, (heard it yesterday in Sanity and it jogged my memory about him singing it at the concert) he sang off his new album though I must admit. His vocal range is limited, when interviewed he starts just about every sentence with "Mate...", and he is restricted in what he can sing, unlike Guy, who can sing anything. Shannon just doesn't connect with people either the way Guy does. If anyone noticed on the night of the Finale, Shannon did wave to people, maybe touched hands with a few, after getting out of the Porsche but walked pretty much up to the steps to Andrew G and James, while Guy lagged behind to sign autographs, talk, hug and touch people. They had to wait for him. Guy is far more engaging and charasmatic, while Shannon is just boring to me. Phew, finally got that off my chest.
I will stop raving on now. Btw if anyone wants to see Shannon he is performing live on Sunrise somewhere between 6 - 9am on Thursday 29th Jan., (tomorrow)Channel 7.

I liked your posting until i read the end of your above message. I think what you said about Shannon is quite offensive to many people. Besides that, it was totally uneccessary to rant on like that about all the negatives on Shannon. I understand that you are obessessed with Guy but i know plenty of people who think that Guy is boring and Shannon is very interesting. I don't understand why you included that last paragraph about Shannon, it appears irrelevant and out of context to the rest of your posts. Therefore it looks like a deliberate attack on Shannon. I am a musician and i do find that Guy is uninteresting and extremely restricted in his tone of voice no matter what genre he is singing. He is a far from perfect singer if you notice that he wavers almost every note to hide his imperfections. See now that not everyone will see things your way and that there are many perspectives on the one singer. So you shouldn't have included what appears to be an irrelevant paragraph about another performer.

I was at last nights Sydney concert, 27th January. It was really awesome. You can feel the positive energy in the place that everybody - the fans and the idols are having a terrific time enjoying the moment.
I enjoyed every minute very much, but most especially when Guy sung "Angels with his own piano accompaniment. For me it is the highlight of the show.
Cheers, Possum

Yeah, I was actually gonna buy that Australian idol greatest moments DVD just to see Guy’s performances. But the site that sells it said I need a different type of DVD player to watch it in America. I think I may get a second player that plays movies from all over the world if I find it. Or I’ll see if there is a place that has a way of converting it. Just read this thread and have another complication for you Aurorab - not only do you have DVD incompatibility problems but you have NTSC TV in the US. Ours is PAL so even videos won't play. You would have to have it converted to NTSC as well. Idol DVD is region 4 PAL so you have to have a PAL compatible DVD player and TV. Sorry to bring you this sad news. There may be multi system and multi region DVD players around. But having it converted sounds the best way to go. For more info go to: www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#1.19My hubby looked this up for you. Isn't he nice supporting me in my obsession too.

I actually asked the electrical goods store that I got my dvd player from about the codes. As my player isn't an Australian brand one, they said the menu has already been "unlocked" when I place a dvd in..meaning regional codes don't matter. So I ordered the American Idol dvd ;D only 4-8 weeks to wait Lol

AURORAB,
I have just listened to what snippets I could download of TTD from Amazon.com that you recommended, and especially liked "To Know Someone Deeply Is To Know Someone Softly". You can really notice similarities with Guy's voice in the quieter types of songs that TTD sings imo. Also, do you or anyone else think that the last song, track 11, on Introducing The Hardline - "Who's Loving You", sounds just like (don't laugh) James Brown, from "I Feel Good...I Knew That I Would Now" fame?
Btw, what is your favourite CD of TTD? I noticed he has about five or so released.

Cherub You got the CD already. Good. Yeah Terence can make his lower register really gravely when he wants. Guy’s voice doesn’t get like that (although he did try to make it a bit gravely when he sang “You’re the voice†I guess to give it effect and texture because John farnham sang it with a deeper voice) Yeah I agree the quieter Terence songs is where you see most similarity. (the ones I suggested you download are like that) When they sing softly or at high register they have that beautiful wind chime effect as they get higher too. Those songs you mentioned and any with high range suits Guy – just like “To know someone deeply, is know someone softly.†Very pretty song. I would like to hear Guy sing that too. When he sang “Wonderful world†on world idol people were saying they noticed the similarity to Terence and they gonna bring out their old Terence Trent Darby tapes and compare. I was shocked too when he opened his mouth. I didn’t expect a great voice like Terence’s to be discovered from Idol franchise (but Guy is like a hidden treasure in Australia) That arrangement and tone Guy sang in showed their similarity most. But I saw from his other songs the variations he brings out in his voice. And he sounds great whether singing at low, medium or high register. (same thing with Terence) that’s why I’m very impressed with Guy’s voice. I think it’s beautiful and flawless. Yeah Terence used the classic 60’s soul influence in his first CD “Introducing the Hardline†that’s why you might notice a “James Brown†vibe in some of the raw and uptempo ones. But it also, shows his Sam Cooke influence the way he sings melodically and high (Terence says Sam Cooke is a big influence on him) But that track 11 “who’s loving you†is a rendition of the Jackson 5 song from the 60’s. My favorite of his CD is definitely his debut “introducing the hardline.†(Its one of my most favorite CDs) I like his new one “Wildcard†too. And “Smphony or damn†and “vibrator†are nice. I haven’t listened to his second CD “Neither Fish nor Flesh†in many years because I lost the tape, but there are songs from it I like a lot like “To know someone deeply is to know someone softly.†I’m gonna have to buy a replacement of it and “Vibrator†cause I can’t find them. Terence’s debut CD has the Pop/Soul vibe. And his later CDs are Pop/Soul/Rock mixture. (Oh and Terence is an American by the way. He started living in England when he was like 20 so some people think he’s British , because he was there when his CD first came out. But he started his music career in New York) You know, I’m not surprised you like Phil Collins and now Guy. When I tried to think of singers who sings beautiful too like Guy, I thought of Terence Trent Darby, and two other American soul singers Howard Hewitt of Shalamar and Maxwell because they sing high and real pretty too. But I also thought of Phil Collins because he has that striking wonderful voice too. I really like Phil Collins. Genesis/Phil were huge in America (he’s consider “blue eyed soul†singer) Yeah Guy seems to be good company because this singers are known for their great voices. I know I liked the band “London beat†with their cool dance oriented Pop music. But I don’t remember clearly the lead singer’s voice being similar to Guy’s. I know they were funky Pop though. Anyway, Since you sampling Terences songs at Amazon, and they only let you sample a few songs. These two sites let you sample all the songs. (Although I mostly shop at Amazon I use this sites to listen to samples) Here are links to his CDs www.circuitcity.com/frame1.jsp?c=1&b=g&upper=head.jsp&inleftcat=Music&lower=clickthrough.jsp&redirectTo=http%3a%2f%2fccity.thestore24.com%2fMusic%2fSearchResults.aspx%3fSEARCH%3dTERENCE%2bTRENT%2bDARBY%26sec%3dAll+Music%26si%3dccity-prodThis plays in either realplayer or mediaplayer shop.towerrecords.com/Music/Default.aspx?search_in=Artist&oft=terence%20trent%20darby&artist_free=terence%20trent%20darby&

Thank you and your husband trying to help me with that. The store clerks here weren’t too helpful at giving me any info, because they don’t usually carry multi region players at stores here. But I was able to find a guy who does foreign DVD conversions and he said they can do it for $25 dollars. Also I was able to find one DVD player at Amazon that apparently plays PAL which is your format, and the American NSTC. But it got mixed reviews from buyers – some says it breaks down and other say it’s great if you follow the manual properly.(my husband will figure that out) I don’t know, maybe I’ll just buy it anyway since its like 50 to 70 dollars. Then I can watch other foreign DVD if I get one. But that’s if my two TV’s works with Pal cause I haven’t looked yet. But one of the buyers said in his review he has one of my TV and it worked, so I’m assuming mine might do the same. Will see, which way I get to watch it. But I’ll be able to order the DVD and it’ll probably take a month before I get it and watch it.
