Guy sang When I Get You Alone and got everyone up dancing. Then the stage went dark, we were all roaring our lungs out and stomping our feet, and a piano was brought on stage. A spotlight went on and Guy was sitting at the piano in a white suit jacket, over a black singlet top he was wearing earlier (he has great biceps) and jeans. He started playing Angels Brought Me Here on the piano and singing, we were all singing along (very loudly) too. About half way through he took the mike and went to the front of the stage to finish the song off. It was superb and I will never forget it. Lastly, all the Idols sang the Austrlaiana medley they sang on the night of the Final, You're the Voice, Shout, Still Call Australia Home etc.. Sounded great. Guy had a 5 O'clock shadow and did look a bit tired though. It has been very hot here in Newcastle and all that rehearsing would have taken it out of them. Guy and everyone, were still so awesome nevertheless. PS I think we are so very, very lucky to have such a brilliant person in all ways, musically and with such depth of character, to be our Idol. I can't wait until Guy has his own tour. So you guys saw them bring the piano on stage. I thought they'd use a concert hall that's equipped with special effects like in the American concert and have him slowly appearing with the piano. They had like the floor opening up and contestants magically appearing from the ground sitting on a sofa singing, or with the standing microphone here. But I'm sure the light being turned off and spotlight on gave enough dramatic effect - and him standing up from piano to finish the song makes the performance all the more well choreographed. And you get to hear his beautiful voice live blasting through the speakers all around you too. I can see why you said you won't forget that moment. Tell us who gets the real big applause and who got the least guys. I know Guy will get a lot. And the rest of the top 5 too. Oh what's the joke behind Paulini's gold top? Why did Dicko wear that one specifically? He's mocking her?

Thanks for the positive feedback, Aurorab.
It great to see someone from America is a fan of Guy's. I'm so glad you have picked up on his talent from World Idol. I certainly haven't been this interested in any singer for quite a long time. (I often wonder what's got into me, I have really surprised myself by being so obsessed with him).
Anyway, I find Guy to be a breath of fresh air in a world which seems to have so much negativity. Although he is musically gifted in a variety of ways (his amazing voice, knowing about arranging, recording, coached kids with their vocal training, and being able to play some instruments - piano, guitar, drums a bit etc), and is a great performer who hypnotises and mesmerises his audience with his stage presence, it is his character which is just so appealing.
I believe it is this facet of Guy, possibly more than anything else (including his hair!) which has given hope and heart to people who have lost a bit of faith in human nature. His conservative moral values (belief in God and regular church attendance, no sex before marriage, no drugs, no smoking, no or very little alcohol), his being part of an intact and supportive nuclear family - a 'mummy's boy', having politeness, respect and consideration for other people, along with a positive attitude and good sense of humour seems just so at odds with what we are accultured to in both pop/rock singers (the 'sex and drugs' image of rock and roll music), and with young men in general.
IMO Guy is the embodiment of an ideal of days gone by. He is an outstanding role model, and his appeal is just phenomenal with young fans here, especially the young women.
Back to the music, I don't know if you can get it, but the Australian Idol Greatest Moments DVD shows Guy singing a few of his songs on the Jukebox section. He sings Crazy in Love, Climb Every Mountain, You're the Voice, When I Get You Alone, Angels Brought Me Here, and When Dove Cry. It helped me cope with withdrawals over the past couple of months since the Idol Finale. I will get to see him again tonight though, as he is singing in Canberra for the Australia Day celebrations. This is screening after the debut of American Idol 3. A good night of television ahead!
The lucky ducks in Sydney will see the AI concert tomorrow night (26th January). Maybe there will be a few more review posts after this. All I know is that I loved it, and especially loved Guy!

amen to all your words Cherub Paulini sang The Voice Within. I would have gone just for that. Paulini singing that song and Guy's piano playin.. just beautiful

Thanks Cherub for the GREAT review of the concert... any extra bits n' bobs you think of... keep posting them please... My son turns 14 on Feb 8 and he chose for the family to go to the Idol concert as his birthday party & present instead of a movie/sleepover party with his mates. He is Cosima mad so we are very pleased to see she is in and singing well. We are going to the Melb concert of Sat 7 Feb (last one I think..?) and even though I am 39 y.o... I CAN'T WAIT!! I have voted for Guy since the start and your post to Aurorab explaining what makes Guy special is, for me, just so spot on. You have articulated what many of us feel and I thank you so much for taking the time to put it all down via the keyboard. Guy is just so incredible and such a breathe of fresh air. At least I don't have to first vet his music to check the language and content before deciding if it's suitable for my kid's to listen to.. At the concert I will probably scream louder than the kids and I have asked them to make me a Guy sign... when they finish making their Cosima and Shannon ones. If I get time I will make us all t-shirts with photo's from the web. Hubby thinks I am going way overboard and much as he loves Paulini's voice he said he doesn't need her plastered all over his chest... what is the matter with the man? At least he is coming to the concert and he puts up with Guy's album being played repeatedly around the house every chance we get! If you think of any other stuff about the Idol concert I would LOVE to see it posted. Especially how did the likes of Lauren, Peter, Kelly, Matt etc go? Did Dicko really wear the gold dress and did Paulini smile about it? And of course... any and all info on GUY, Shannon, Cosima, Paulini and Millsy as they are our family of 5's fave's... Anyway, thanks so much again for taking the time. There are many of us who rarely post but we do find a few minutes each day to read what all of the regular posters have taken the time to write. We appreciate all of you and the diversification of opinions...

Oh, I just read your last post Aurorab.
The Newcastle Entertainment Centre (NEC) isn't very technologically advanced I'm afraid (it's a wonder we have an entertainment centre at all, and I was pleasantly surprised that the Final 12 came here, as Sydney is only a couple of hours or so away from here). The NEC seats about 5000 people and it was full of course. I wish we had Guy coming up from the floor with a piano, that would have been awesome, but we could really just see movement on the dark stage after Guy went off after singing When I Get You Alone. We realised it was a piano that had been brought on stage only after Guy was lit up with the spotlight. Guy's ABMH was the absolute highlight of the night for me.
Guy had the most applause by far, especially after Dicko had introduced him as the last solo act. The clapping, screaming, foot stomping, and cheering was absolutely deafening. I've never heard anything like it. It was a roar. I wonder how Guy felt?
Shannon got heaps of applause for What About Me, his new single (BTW, I'm not a Shannon fan at all), and I suppose that was a clue really that Guy would be coming up next, when the runner-up sings their newly released single towards the end of the show.
Everyone was well-received, but IMO Cle got the least applause after she sang her initial two songs. (The contestants all got to choose their own songs). I think Cle decided to turn into the rock chick (Kelly). I can't remember her first rock song (I don't like her anyway), and then she sang an original which was REALLY rocky, and you couldn't hear her voice properly over the band. The audience seemed like, huh?? at the end, and she didn't generate a lot of clapping compared to the others, I didn't think.
The top four got loads of support, and Levi (6th) and Millsy (5th) got lots of support too. Levi got a girl up on stage to dance with him, which I thought was really nice, and he also got the audience singing the chorus to one of his songs. That Justin Timberlake one with the high voices in it. Not real good with titles.
About Paulini and Dicko. There was an uproar about the judge's comments when Paulini wore a gold top and skirt outfit one night that was shiny and sort of ruffled or gathered down the centre. She's not fat, but it made her thigh's stand out a bit I thought. After she sang, Mark Holden said, "What's with what you're wearing girl? Whoever told you to wear that, I wouldn't listen to them again". Then Dicko told Paulini to either, "Wear more appropriate clothing or shed some pounds". Well, the "shed some pounds" comment especially went over like the proverbial. It was topical on talkback radio the next day, tabloid journos put it on their shows that night, and Paulini got heaps of sympahy votes out of it.
When Who magazine came out in December, there was a picture of Dicko wearing the gold outfit. He's a real funny bugger. So at the concert, after some of the performers had sung, Dicko would come out and have a little chat to them and have a joke. He came out to Paulini and Paulini said "I've got a bone to pick with you". Dicko said something like "What about?" and Paulini said "About that dress". She went up close to him and started pointing at him and said "What's this?" She had spotted a bit of gold flashing under his shirt. She ripped open the front of his shirt to reveal the offending gold top. Dicko showed the audience and we all laughed and Dicko then chased Paulini off stage. So that's the story of the gold outfit drama.
Hope some of this helps, Aurorab.

[glow=red,2,300]CHERUB[/glow]
Thanks for inviting us all to a concert many of us can never attend, and giving us great insights into what it was like.
Your write-ups above are an inspiration - I'm sure Guy would be thrilled with how you've written up on Newcastle's big night.
I've just posted a news article that was in today's (25 Jan 04) Brisbane Sunday Mail in this board's 'news articles' section on Guy - there's also a full page sized photo of Guy in the paper, before you get to the article - quite a treat to come across it, actually. Suddenly turn the page - and BANG a whopping big photo of Guy. A few pages over was the article I've posted in the news section. It had a smaller good photo of Guy with the article, also.
Nice to see him getting such good coverage. Popular lad.
Congratulations to Guy and the AI team for their concert/s.
[glow=red,2,300](Special thanks cherub, I so appreciated your ''treat' to us.)[[/glow]

Thanks Family5. I just read your post.
Your son is very considerate using his birthday as an opportunity to experience a great show as a family.
I have been dying to post on this board for ages, as I read it often, and now I've gone mad after plucking up the courage since going to the Newcastle concert.
I forgot to add in my views on Guy, no swearing - your checking the lyrical content for your kids reminded me of that, and his integrity in not promoting consumer products he doesn't believe in. Pepsi is safe, but I couldn't see him doing an ad. for alcohol (Bundy Rum etc for example).
I am 36yo. My hubby thinks I am nuts too, being soooo adoring of Guy. He too is a mad Paulini fan. He couldn't believe it when she was voted out, even I sadly thought Guy was going to go. I would have been the crushed one then. I initially liked Bek, and then loved Guy the most after she went, and it has turned into quite an obsession ever since.
I went to the concert with a friend from work. She was joking that we would be the grannies there, and she is only 29yo. My hubby kindly dropped us off and picked us up though, parking is a nightmare.
Don't worry about having T-Shirts, huge banners, afro wigs etc, there was plenty of all that at Newcastle. As long as the banners don't block anyone's view, they're okay, and Dicko should get everyone to show them a couple of times during the night. The one that won here was a cut-out map of Australia (minus Tassy) from yellow cardboard with green tinsel stuck all around the edges. It had written "100% Australian Made Talent" written on it. So if you go general for all 12, rather than specifically Guy, Shannon, Cosima etc.. then it may be more of a winner.
Lauren sang better than I honestly thought she would. She sang Christine Aguilera's Fighter song first, then Imagine, which got her into the top 40. Kelly sang I'm Just a Girl, I think and then that "Wake me up Inside" song (unsure about the title, but sure that's the song) you hear a lot of these days - is it Evanescence? Pete the pig farmer was fantastic. He has a brilliant voice. He sang Money Can't Buy Me Love first, and then Burn for You by John Farnham of course. He was great. Matt went first, and I can't remember the first song, but it was up tempo, and then sang Angels by Robbie Williams. Millsy sang that "is there anyone out there, it's getting harder and harder to breathe" song, and Matchbox 20s Bright Lights. He was very energetic. I think I said somewhere else about him sing a duet with Courtney Act. It was good too.
If you're son is Cosima mad, he won't be disappointed. She sang as well as she ever did before her illness. She looked lovely in a long black dress for her first ballady song. Then it got torn off, (it was sort of like a light coat I suppose), to reveal a shorter black dress with sparklies on it to sing Delta's Predictable. The duet she sang with Shannon was very touching too. Bek sang Heading in the Right Direction and sorry I can't remember the first one.
When Guy sang All I Need is You and Climb Every Mountain, he wore a mid-tan suit jacket and pants with a white t-shirt and white shoes. Truthfully, I probably wouldn't have gone if he wasn't going to be there.
All up, I was very impressed. If I think of anything else, I'll post it up. I can't wait to hear what other people think of the AI concerts in their respective cities, and I especially hope my memory is accurate, given my old age!!

WOW....you are writing 'fantabulous' reviews Cherub.
Again a HUGE THANKYOU for all your efforts. Hubby has just said not to tell the kids all the detail and let it all be a surprise for them... so now I have to keep my big mouth SHUT.... AAAAHHH that will be so hard as I am already busting to tell them all you have written ;D
They will love it.. and hubby even said it sounds better than he expects it to be after my reading parts of your reviews to him.
The part about Guy playing piano while singing will blow my kids away totally as they play piano and both are at a stage where they make up their own music and lyrics and get praised by music teachers etc for their efforts. They appreciate how difficult it is to play and sing at the same time. Unfortunately we live in Country Vic and at present there are virtually NO singing teachers here otherwise my daughter would be into that too...
And.. please don't say you are OLD at 36.. flip that 6 over and you've got me remember! You're only as old as your current state of mind.. and right now with all this Idol phenomena I am about 18 (tops!).
BTW.. I am chuckling to myself because I am on this board posting and hubby is doing the washing and cleaning the kitchen, 1 kid is vacuuming, 1 is cleaning loo's and 1 is dusting her room. I went out and said 'it's cool I'm nearly off, I'll do that' and 14 y.o says 'yeah right Mum.. your more obsessed than us... go read the posts and we'll just do the slave labour for you'!! ;D ;D

CHERUB - Oh yeah I was wowed by Guy’s beautiful voice and performance the minute I saw him on world idol. He sounded similar to one of my favorite singers Terence Trent Darby, who I think has the most beautiful voice in the world – and the industry and fans sees as a great talent like Michael Jackson & Prince. It’s not hard to see why you all like Guy and wanna support a true talent like his. I was losing interest in the idol franchise until Guy came along.
Thanks for going into more details with the review. I’m not surprised he got such a great applause. I’m sure he was humbled by it all and overwhelmed in a good way. ( I’ve listened to a lot of his songs from the competition and noticed people tend to scream a lot when he performed compared to others.)
Yeah, I was actually gonna buy that Australian idol greatest moments DVD just to see Guy’s performances. But the site that sells it said I need a different type of DVD player to watch it in America. I think I may get a second player that plays movies from all over the world if I find it. Or I’ll see if there is a place that has a way of converting it.
FAMILY5 – Make your T-shirts and signs and go support your favorites. Have fun and cheer real loud for Guy.
