In most cases it is a reflection of crime itself.
But then again you have 'fun-rap' - Will Smith for example.. and then the hard core gangsta rap which I reckon encourages crime... rape your mum, slit your throat etc etc
those are my thoughts on it...

people always find it easier to blame others instead of themselves...blaming rap music for causing crimes is another example
Rap music doesnt force you to commit crimes you do that by yourself

I don't think that you can blame rap by itself. However, alot of young people look up to Rappers as role models and if they are talking about all the negative stuff then it only follows that the fans may, in fact, begin to emulate some of the negativity.

Jarred-Have you read Michael Moores "Stupid White Men"? I remember reading a bit in it where he was talking about rap music, and he was basically saying that a lot of people seem to point the finger at rap music for encouraging violence, etc, but really a lot of the lyrics are quite aware and intelligent, and gave a few examples. I don't remember what he wrote exactly, but I think his theory was that the reason peole are so quick to oppose rap music is because it is a genre of music mainly written and listened to by black people...and I'm sure you can do the maths from there. It made a lot of sense when I read it, but I can't remember where it was in the book, sorry! Although I think there are 2 sides of the coin...for instance, I find Eminem competely disgusting. Although I do have to wonder if anyone would actually take him seriously enough to go out and do something...and if soemone actually did, surely these people were quite unstable anyway, and not simply as a result of what music they listened to. And besides, although I detest Eminem, his music is just one example, not indicative of the whole genre. Your assignment sounds interesting, I wish we got given stuff like that when i did legal studies!

I want to know YOUR opinion, im doing this for my Year 12 studies so i hope for your co operation... do you feel rap music is causing crime or do you feel it is a reflection of the times? please be analytical with your responses ... thank you I don't think rap music causes crime. I've listened to rap since I was about 8 years old (I'm now almost 20) and I have never felt the urge to go out and hurt people or break into cars/shops etc. I listen to it because I like the sound of the way different artists express themselves about things that have happened in their lives or things they've seen etc. As for artists such as Eminem, I don't think his lyrics are to be taken seriously and he's mentioned that a number of times. Is rap music a reflection of the times? Definately! Look at the music charts, R&B/Rap/Hip Hop sells. You need only to turn on the radio and hear a reggae influenced rap song, such as Sean Paul or Wayne Wonder. Or even one with an Indian twist to it, like the Panjabi MC and Hit Squad. Would reggae or bhangra/Indian pop music be played on mainstream radio stations all over the world? This genre of music is currently very popular and with rap, artists can use all these different cultural sounds and mix it together with more western styles beats, for a fresh new sound. Hope that helps, and good luck with your work/studies/assignment!

It is a bit like the chicken and the egg question.
Yes it is a reflection of our times. Many of the rappers (though not all) sing about incidents that have happened in their lives and that they see happening around them.
But yes it does encourage more violence. As people listen to and immerse themselves in the violent rap culture, their belief in the often hopelessness of the situation they see themselves in, is reinforced. The music does not offer a way out or a way of coping, but often only a way of getting even. And so the vicious cycle continues. Adding to that, listeners who are already into gang crime feel legitimised by this music, after all others are with them in this. It must be okay.
Not all listeners, of course, turn to the violence offered in gangsta or violent rap but one has to ask, is even a small percentage of adversely influenced listeners worth the escalation in crime that this music can incite.

Some times people can react to what they see in the media and television pertaining to the new reality TV shows where unknown wannabees get there 15 minutes of fame, eg Cosima.

I don't blame RAP - I blame Farting Millsy!! - hole in the ozone layer for starters. totally pinkline . rap is hardcore but it does no harm people shouldnt take it so seriously and if they do get influenced then its there own fault . millsy on the other hand is like coca cola - seems harmless but has long term effects if you have large doses of it
