Just so I can fully understand your definition of distinctiveness and unique voices, can you name me some major singers (ie. non-Pop Idol) whose voices you find different enough? VERY good question 'fatso terence' ;D ;D ;D ;D - - is it a trick question? - You are making me think about the wider question you clever clog! Yes - I know we are all individuals - but here goes - (and I don't say I like them all - neither am i saying that Guy's voice is as different as the ones I will name, but his voice is different enough from other contestants.) NORAH JONES - imagine how she would have stood out if she were an idol contestant. BEEGEES RAY CHARLES KATE BUSH AARON NEVIL ELVIS DOLLY PARTON SINATRA ROD STEWART TINA TURNER - I'll just have to stop there for now because the list will be too long. It is also true that as we become more familiar with the voices the indibiduality will show more - it's just that Guy's voice stood out from moment ONE!! Sorry there are so many oldies on the list, but that's my era.

What about someone like John Lennon or Bob Dylan? I'd probably say their voices are more distinctive than Norah Jones or Ray Charles. Anyway, my main point was yes, when you become more familiar with an artist as a singer their voice becomes more distinctive from another's. It would probably only take me to hear two songs from one artist before I could probably recognise their voice by the time I heard their third song. And honestly, I don't remember noticing Guy until probably around there were eight or so left. Then I probably thought "Huh, he could go far". Ray Charles, Elvis, Sinatra, Rod Stewart and Tina Turner (when she was with Ike, anyway) are all great to awesome though, I'll give you that. My most distinctive voices (as quickly as possible): John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Prince, Dusty Springfield, Rod Stewart, Art Garfunkel, the lead singer of Coldplay whose name I don't know, Bob Dylan (nobody else could have a voice that bad), and I ought to stop now lest this list becomes too long. A few oldies on my list too. What does that make my era?

PRINCE AND BOB DYLAN WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE on my list if I'd thought for longer - but not John Lennon. (love him - but not a totally different voice). Guy is not an originator either - that's not what I've been saying. (who's voice stood out for you most and first on AI1? (I mean voice - not performance) We have moved off on an interesting tangent.

Every voice is unique, it's just some are more pleasant than others and some are more distinctive than others.
Love your choices Frogo. I could add grandad's Vera Lynn, Julie Andrews, Debbie Reynolds to that too. (I borrowed his car one day and drove to Noosa with just one Vera Lynn cassette in it! But I can see the attraction to her very evocative voice.)
As for this bunch in AI2 Angie caught my family's ear as soon as she sang. So did Courtney. Have to wait to see if the others grow or not. If they don't they will be out.
I have only just watched Guy's semi-final performance (missed nearly the whole of series 1) and I was amazed at the quality of the other peroformers actually. Guy really shone when he showed he could sing anything, anything at all, and his arrangements were very unique. I'm surprised he made it through on the first round as the standard was very good and we couldn't see those other qualities in him yet.
I wonder who among those that look ordinary that just squeeked in can pull that off too.
