If you can remember Guys semi-final performance was pretty average. Yolande, Bek and Shannon all did better than him that night. In fact I don't think Guy really stood out till about the top 7.
I'm not sure if this years better than last year, I think I'll reserve that judgement till later on in the competition.

You don't think any voices thus far are unique? What about Courtney, Chanel and, to an extent, Ngairre? I would say these three at the very least have extremely distinctive voices from the norm. Hi babooshka - I was actually referring to lats nights group (3). but since you mentioned it (and this is purely my pesonal opinion), - no-one's voice in AI2 has made me sit up and take notice - SOME PERFORMANCES HAVE - but not the voices in their own right. Isn't it great that we all have different opinions - I just wish that some of last nights group didn't have to be eliminated, because all but 1 deserve to go through.

IMO there have been quite a few "Where did that come from" moments so far.
Courtney's performance made me stop what I was doing and watch. As did Chanel's. Ngaiire blew me away completely.
While last week wasnt the best week, Angie impressed me a lot. I can see a real Soul Diva with Angie.
As far as last night..Ricki Lee was awesome. I had no idea she could perform like that. Casey was amazing, who'd think she was only 16. And Emelia brings the much needed alternative vibe to the show, as does Marty.
Overall I feel this year is a bit stronger than last years (matching Semi final performances)
And please don't jump down my throat (Lol) but Carlos really reminded me of Guy last night. Both by style of singing and just the tone in his voice.

IMhumbleO the standard is generally higher this year. If you put last years 12 up against this years lot only 3 would have gone through. ( Guy of course, Cosima and Paulini).

I agree with you about some PERFORMANCES - especially of NGAIRIE - love her to bits - but I am talking ABOUT THE VOICE BEING DIFFERENT AND DISTICTIVE as well as superb performance!!!!!!!!! My test is - if I were to hear them singing out of context without seeing them, would I know who it was singing. - I MEAN - MIXED UP WITH OTHER ALREADY ESTABLISHED ARTIST - NOT JUST IN AN IDOL CONTEXT. For example - Fantasia I would have been able to pick from very early on if she were to be singing on a radio programme with other non-idol artists. LUV HER TOO!!

While last week wasnt the best week, Angie impressed me a lot. I can see a real Soul Diva with Angie. Okay, I like Angie. But for a big soul mama I find her voice average. I'm trying to think of how to articulate this best. She does have a very good and strong voice, but at the same time I don't think it's unique from other very good and strong voices. He's not really alternative though, despite how he tries to be in the same vein as Kelly last year. Drops Of Jupiter is a top ten hit, The Darkness is a top twenty band and, if you read his bio on the official site, his mentioned artists are Guns N Roses, Aerosmith, The New Radicals and Radiohead. Of every band that he has made mention of, Radiohead would be the only band who I would call Radiohead (and even they had a radio hit). Of this year the only person who I would say is providing the alternative aspect to the show would be Chanel, with singing Portishead, Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Kinks etc. And, from last night, I'd say Casey was the most alternative of the night. I like Chanel and Casey because they really are alternative and sing music 90% of the audience is not familiar with. Marty is what I will call "faux-alternative", singing songs that appeal to 90% of the audience but try and make it appear as if it's meant to be appealing to that other 10%. Does that make sense?

Frogo -
Isn't Courtney's voice fairly distinctive? I'd say Chanel's too, but don't you think Courtney's voice in particular is really nothing like anyone else?

I think they are both superb - Chanel especially interesting - noticed her from day 1, but not for her VOICE - more her fantastic personality, style and performance. I would put Billie in there too with Courtney - they both have lovely voices - just not differrent enough. (Billie makes herself different with her style). but who am I to judge, just a very interested punter -not a musician. (I'm loving this discussion). xxxx

Just so I can fully understand your definition of distinctiveness and unique voices, can you name me some major singers (ie. non-Pop Idol) whose voices you find different enough?
