This is what I heard on Kyle and Jackie O when they did the interview today with Usher... it is not word for word
but they asked him what he thought of American Idol bringing instant fame to the winners....
and he reckons they will find it hard to follow up that fame or success as a hit artist.....he was referring to longevity as an artist or singer I think..I was driving so could not give it my full attention..
he said the runners up in America will do better or is more succesful ...and Jackie agreed...She said yeah like it is here in Australia...
If someone heard this too and heard something different ...feel free to chip in ....thought that was interesting......cos Jackie would be one of the few media people whose finger is on the pulse of the music world....

thankyou guest for the info i think jackie o genuinely likes Guy as a person, and sees his talent etc etc etc but whether Guy can have a longevity as a popular artist in Oz is up to the public, and mostly Guy himself. No doubt he has the talent and ability to do even more amazing things, but i sometimes question if he has the err...drive (whatta pun!)

Making general chit chat I'd say.
It's very hard to test longevity when Idols haven't been around long. Also each Idol will be different depending on the caliber of the winner....
...and yes "wanting it" is a very important factor. Guy seems keen but he isn't prepared to "sell his soul" as some are to get there.
I always detect in these interviews with other musicians/artists a hint of cynicism. I can understand that they are sore that other have had what they see as an easy ride to the top and are very disparaging of it. Perhaps there is some truth in it as I'd be very surprised if Guy maintained the level of popularity he now has. That really is unrealistic.
That is the problem with starting at the top, everywhere else after that seems to be down, when really it is just going along. He has the leg up in the industry that many dream of. I'm sure he won't squander it.
"he said the runners up in America will do better or is more succesful " I wonder what that is based on? Kelly Clarkson appears to be doing well, or am I imagining things.
"...and Jackie agreed...She said yeah like it is here in Australia..." Mmmm is that because Shannon has a tour on or upcoming? That definitely ups his profile. And good on him too. He has a real appeal to country folk that will be hard to beat.
Pity though that everyone is continually checking Guy off against Shannon and vice versa, as if they are still in the competition. I think it's time to let them run their own careers now and any differences will be because of the style and career choices made rather than the status attached to a title.

Good replies there Ava and Maybe .... let Guy and Shannon be...that's what we should do from now on... altho there will be the odd comparison now and then...but they are stars in their own right ..
Wish both of them all the success from here on...

very well put MN i have to tell you guys about what i read in this month's SAIN magazine just now - it was in the letters to the Editor section... where every month ppl write in to word off about acts that 'don't deserve' ther fame, wealth, glory etc one guy (who got letter of the month!) wrote something along the lines of: "an original live band can pull only a handful of ppl to a venue, while a shopping mall can pull thousands of screaming fans to an appearence by someone from Australian Idol, who don't write or play their own music." and that an act should 'suffer' or something before they get a break. ppl like this REALLLLLLLY bug me. Sure i can understand the 'sanctity' of music..but when ppl write garbage like this, i get really mad one, the majority of acts who do shopping centre gigs are pop acts...they know how fickle the market is - and they don't go around saying they are the ONLY type of music that is worth listening to, unlike preachers like this guy who i hear ranting ALL the time - you don't have to like pop music! it's only called pop cos its popular! ie, liked by many people! two, if the same bunch of screaming people turned up to a gig of a band this person considers to have 'earned' success, they'd probably either label them 'fake fans' or say the band has sold out by going too 'mainstream'. and third, we all know Guy is a musician - he has a way with words, melodies, harmonies, arrangements and certain instruments that he's proven many times over from his work on Idol. On top of that, he can SING! man can he sing! *sigh* and he performs his tooshy off too. Like Guy said, most of the Idols came from musical backgounds so im sick of people trying to bring down others because they consider them too 'pop' and if success seems to have come too quickly, ultimately its talent that keeps you successful, so why not let that be decided in the public arena? i hate it when people are quick to say the people from Idol don't deserve the attention they've gotten - if they don't come up with the goods, they'll fade. That's the truth regardless of how much publicity they gett initially sorry if this sounds all over the place, even i know this isn't even a fully cohesive argument...but im peed off!

All this 'suffering for your art' busines from the writers in that magazine is ridiculous.....what the idolists did especially for Shannon and Guy in the last couple of months of the series ...I'd say that was a baptism of fire...the pressure and the public scrutiny, the conspiracy theories...you name it they hve lived it.... even Maricia said she would not want to go thru that to make it!!
So why do they begrudge these two for their success? There was an opportunity there, they took it. Like Shannon said, 'You do not find a Dicko in a pub in Forbes every day of the week?'
and he was just at this wit's end regarding his musical career before AI came up....and the public support these two have ...well they both have the personality, the charm, charisma and the obvious singing ability and talent that the fans identify with....you can't manufacture that ..it was there to be discovered...
so to these writers..methinks there is resentment and more than a touch of the green eyed monster... well AI 2 is coming up..I'd say shut up and if you think you are good enough...the opportunity is there to show what you are made of to make it.

Well said guest. Suffering for your art and green eyed monsters are pretty much spot on.
There is so much snobbery in the music industry and so much jealousy... and to be fair it is worth noting that there are a lot of very talented people that never make it.... but that does not lessen the talent of those that do. It is such a hit and miss business. And very fickle. I think it can be cruel too. Even those who make it can have a rough ride.
Guy, Shannon and the other Idols that have signed up are going to have to weather some tough times ahead.

I think Usher was basing it on Clay vs Ruben in AI2. Ruben won, but Clay's sold a bajillion more records than him.

also Uk runner up Gareth Gates seems to be more popular worldwide that Will Young was
Shannon isnt more successful than Guy at this stage, just he's promoting as much as he can around Australia while it lasts
Guy is busy doing work overseas than locally atm

I think Usher was basing it on Clay vs Ruben in AI2. Ruben won, but Clay's sold a bajillion more records than him. From what i've read Clay should've won anyway as over 100 000 votes of his weren't registered during the voting period? Than Ruben took forever to release an album that wasn't even the style that helped him 'win' idol. As for Guy vs Shannon - The second album will show who's doing better. First albums can be called "impulse" buys from the hype a reality show generally attracts. The only idol so far to have 2 No.1 albums is Will Young which shows winners can have longetivity. But from what i've gathered so far Shannon has more publicity, gets more radio time, and is closing on Guy's sales. He got the better end of the deal.

Clay should have won, but Ruben actually delayed the release of his album so that Clay could release his first and there wouldn't be such a conflict in the stores. Those guys are/were pals!
