just something interesting I found online today... Darren Hayes aka Savage Garden loves Prince as well
he wasnt referring to Guy but maybe thats why the fuss about Guy not singing WDC on world idol, and also Clay (usa runner up) was singing WDC in his concert .....not sure if he started that because Guy has it on his album?

I love Guy's version,
Singing is expressive, reflective of what you are inside
I think it's fine for people to sing the same song and express it differently, as a song writer it's interesting for Prince, who i also love
On one hand it's flattering, but on the other, it must be like someone has misinterpreted what he was singing.
Prince will only ever see the colour he painted, no matter how many times people try to paint over it, so for him, I can understand it being hard, but for artists i think it's great to express where that song takes you, like Guy did so beautifully.

I can understand where these bad feelings of resentment come from. There is a huge amount of snobbery and jealousy in the music industry, and the 'tall poppy' sydrome is not just an Australian idiosycracy.
I think some of you may recall my muso brother's comments I posted up as a link a few weeks back. I have hung around the edges with musos before (although I'm not one myself) and know a bit of how they think. These hard working wannabees are desperate to get the break they need to make it and are extremely jealous of those who do. They run down almost everyone above them at various times (even people who are legends). I guess this makes them feel a little better... what easier way to bring yourself up than to pull those above you down. It is an extremely hard industry to crack and many very talented people never make it, so it is understandable I guess and needless to say quite depressing too. I can understand their infuriation with people who catch the lift to the top. What they don’t always appreciate is that these lift catchers may themselves be ones who have worked hard for many years as well and this is their break.
However I find something very interesting about these people who become Idols. I believe many would often never have made it in the pop industry any other way and for these reasons. Take Guy for instance – (This is just my opinion here and nothing else) Film star looks – He doesn’t have this quality that is so often sought out by the music industry; the Idol shows get round this by letting the public get to know the person. His personality had a chance to shine through. Guy himself has repeatedly said that it isn’t a beauty contest. Won’t sell his soul – Guy is very fussy on what songs he will or won’t sing. When he produced his album he refused to sing anything sexy or sleazy or with even mildly offensive lyrics. He gave the producers a “lot of grief” over the song choice apparently. This alone, I believe, would have disqualified him from a contract. Companies want control and he won’t give it. In the end BMG gave in saying, ‘If he doesn’t want to sing it what’s the point.’ Had it not been for the fact that they had only one week to produce this album and it was all locked into place to go ahead, I doubt if it would ever have eventuated. Too much of a Mr Nice Guy for pop - It is all right for a girl to be sweet (e.g. Delta Goodrem) but not OK for a bloke. I really don’t think record companies would see that as a selling point. It is only because people watching the show saw how genuinely nice he was that they came to like him very much. In effect he showed them he was OK.
I believe this is true of many of the other Idols that made it. Think of how many of the WI contestants wore glasses. That in itself is enough to disqualify someone from a record deal (don’t believe me, then name some please). This brews resentment from others who have followed the unspoken rules and still not made it.
