'American Idol' closing arguments
Finalists a little bit country, a little bit rock 'n' roll

POLL | Who will be the next 'American Idol'?

The scene has shifted to the Kodak Theatre in prostitute-and-tourist-infested Hollywood as Tuesday (May 24) night's "American Idol" begins. The extra-large theater is packed to the gills and the cameraman is still learning to adapt to the 3000-strong venue, experimenting with nauseating whip-pans and vertigo-inducing overhead shots. It could be a long night.
It's Boy vs. Girl -- Bo Bice vs. Carrie Underwood -- in the finale, prompting host Ryan Seacrest to make a joke about the dreaded possibility of a "From Bo to Carrie" movie. I was thinking more of a remake of "A Star Is Born," specifically the Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson version. That would be sweet.
After last week's show, they did a coin toss for tonight's performance order. Ryan flipped a tacky coin and it went down the grate at the CBS Studio stage. In the re-flip, Carrie won and elected to receive to start the second half, meaning that Bo is up first...
...Carrie closes the night with "Angels Brought Me Here," which was the big song from "Australian Idol." And if it's good enough for Guy Sebastian, it's good enough for Carrie. I don't want to delve into conspiracy theories, but it seems shady that Carrie gets a semi-established hit song as her bonus track and Bo was stuck with "The Long, Long Road." She's flat for much of the song and makes little wincing faces as if to demonstrate that she's really really believing that angels brought her here. It's simply a better pure ballad than any of the other originals performed tonight and it feels like an indication that the producers think they'll be more successful working with Carrie as an "Idol" winner. She even cries at the end.
She may be unstoppable. Randy stands in appreciation. In just three months, Paula has loved Carrie a lifetime. Simon, who has said all season that he expects Carrie to win, argues that Carrie has done enough to capture the crown.
On my scorecard, Bo Bice won the night two rounds to one. However, between the excessive judicial adulation, several different rounds of crying and the ringer of a third song, Carrie Underwood may have this one in the bag.
