Iraq tour for local Thursday, 19 May 2005
ONE former local is touring the world to help Australian troops by bringing them music.
Shaun Sibbes, formerly of Spencer Tracey fame, will fly out on Thursday with his new band The Avenues for a whirlwind tour of Iraq and the Middle East to visit Australian services personnel.
Dubbed Tour De Force, some aspects of the visit are classified but Mr Sibbes assured the Collie Mail he and the band would be in no danger.
"We're only going into green zones, where it is supposed to be 100 per cent safe," he said.
The opportunity came out of the blue for Mr Sibbes who has only been with the band for two shows.
"This will be my third show with The Avenues and we actually took Guy Sebastian's spot because he couldn't make it," he said.
"They were looking for a band that would do it straight away and that was us."
Mr Sibbes is thrilled to be going to Iraq and cheering up the Australians stationed there.
"I don't think it gets any more exciting than this," he said.
"We will be staying in Saddam Hussein's palace, I want to bring back a rock or a door handle or something."
All jokes aside the job they will be doing there is quite serious.
"The Australian troops are there rebuilding what the rest of the world has blown up and we are just going to give them something entertaining," he said.
"Basically just to make them feel our country does support what they are doing and hopefully it will make them feel less lonely."
