MORE than 2000 glammed-up, wannabe superstars travelled thousands of kilometres, camped out overnight or simply joined the massive queue that snaked along the Cairns Pier yesterday for the first Australian Idol 3 audition yesterday.

Even rain could not deter the contestants, some of whom had travelled from the Atherton Tableland, Townsville, Mackay, Darwin and Alice Springs for their shot at the big time.
Australian Idol hosts James Mathison and Andrew G made their entrance in a helicopter with the show's newest "bad boy" judge, Hot 30 radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands.
Sandilands, who replaced Ian "Dicko" Dickson on the show's judging panel, said the attendance surpassed his expectations and the auditions unearthed a plethora of fresh talent.
Sandilands was critical of the second series yesterday, saying judges were too quick to dismiss talented contestants who simply had a bad day or chose a bad song.
Sandilands said he had already suffered the wrath of one contestant who felt he was biased against her because she sang country music.
"She was terrible but not because of the genre of music she sang," he said.
"But she tore my bloody head off."
Townsville student Jedda Treloar, 16, also missed out on the finals this year after travelling to the auditions with her mother and lining up at 3.30am.
"I unfortunately didn't get in this time but I had a lot of encouragement to try again," she said. "I just have to work on a few vocal techniques and come back."
Australian Idol auditions will be held at Brisbane's Suncorp Piazza on May 21, 22 and 23.
