Mobile phone 'soap' available from May
16:59 AEST Wed Apr 20 2005
Soapie addicts will soon be able to download a fix of Random Place - the first ever Australian soapie for mobile phone users.
Random Place, which uses still photography and written dialogue, has been launched by mobile phone carrier Vodafone.
It features an all-Australian cast in a storyline which revolves around life in a Bondi Beach share-house.
"It's a very interesting mix of people which is made for a very crazy kind of vibe on set," executive producer Bill Roberts said of the Random Place cast.
"I think the product is going to capture the flavour of that."
The soapie stars Olympic pole vaulter Tatiana Grigorieva and beach volleyballer Nicole Sanderson along with Australian Idols Dan O'Connor, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Marty Worrall.
"It's about life and love, with a strong focus on misadventure," he said.
"They're always getting into all kinds of crazy scrapes."
Mobile phone users can view the show by receiving an SMS which will give them a link to the program.
This can be done anytime after the show is released.
Random Place will be sent out at 8am and 3.30pm each day from May 2, with 10 episodes a week from Monday to Friday.
Each episode is six pictures per copy and is designed to be around a five to 10 minute read.
Vodafone subscribers will pay $1.50 per episode while Telstra and Optus customers will be charged $2.50.
"It's not TV and it's not video," Roberts said.
"And this is very important because most people do not have video capable phones.
"It's designed for anybody who finds their commute boring.
"If you're sitting on a train platform and you think `oh gee that train's taking a long time."
He said the idea came from Holland where its version of the show Jong Zuid was launched in December 2003.
"Our view is that Australia is the home of soap opera," Roberts said.
"We've taken the concept, not the show, and we've made it completely Australian."
