Court case ... Will Shannon be sticking to water in future?
A SERIES of "big names" will provide character references for singer Shannon Noll when he appears in Condobolin court this week.
Noll, a former Australian Idol contestant, was caught drink-driving in the central west New South Wales town in December.
He recorded a blood alcohol reading of .110 - which is more than twice the legal limit - and will be sentenced by a circuit court magistrate on Tuesday.
Noll's manager, David Caplice, would not reveal the names of those who have provided references. "This is a private matter," Mr Caplice said.
However, a source close to the singer said some "big names" from the entertainment industry will vouch for Noll. They may include television personalities Ian Dickson and Mark Holden, Canadian rocker Bryan Adams and Warner Music boss Ed St John.
An uncle of Noll, the Condobolin-based Dennis Swadling, who is a Lachlan Shire councillor, will not provide a reference.
"As a councillor and Justice of the Peace, I get put under pressure for this sort of thing every time the circuit court sits in Condobolin," Mr Swadling told The Sunday Telegraph. "I write references for job applications, but not for court.
"What can I say about Shannon? He acted stupidly, and we have all been there and done that.
"He will square his shoulders and cop what's given to him. That's the kind of bloke that he is."
Mr Swadling said a drinking culture in Condobolin contributed to Noll's predicament.
"More than in the city, everything here revolves around alcohol," Mr Swadling said.
"It's hard for Shannon because ... when he comes back home, all his old cricket, football and school mates want to go out and party.
"To them, he's just Shannon, not Shannon Noll the rock star.
"Many of them live on isolated farms and, with fuel being so costly, they don't get into town often. A lot of the boys get done for drink-driving at Christmas."
Noll spent Easter in Condobolin with his wife and two children. After his court appearance he will fly to the UK, where he will stay with his friend Bryan Adams.
