Fired after stupid stunt July 29, 2004 DOUG Steel, the 2DAYFM staffer who last week took the name of a promotion way too literally, has been sacked by the Austereo network. He was shown the door after one of his so-called gags went wrong at Rose Bay eatery Catalina last Wednesday. Steel had been entrusted with a stunt named "Inappropriate Idol", a take on Australian Idol, which involves breaking into tune unexpectedly in public. Rather than sing at Woolloomooloo Wharf as directed, Steel burst into the restaurant with a megaphone and recited lines from a rap song. But all that the terrified diners heard was Steel shouting "Put your hands up" before he bolted from the premises. He was given his marching orders after Austereo general manager Patrick Joyce went into damage control mode, contacting everyone dining at Catalina during Steel's stunt and offering to pay for their meals. "Our stunts are supposed to be fun and they're supposed to not cause people distress," he said yesterday. "He left the building with pretty clear orders about what he was supposed to do and he just decided to do something different and caused a lot of distress to a lot of people. "Unfortunately that was his decision and he's had to wear the consequences of it at the end of the day." dailytelegraph.news.com.au/story.jsp?sectionid=1266&storyid=1690983
