(Showing on Tuesday, Jul 27) Cruel and unusual Australian Idol – Top 100 7.30pm, Ten 'THAT was crap. Total crap. Thank you." Audition time again for Australian Idol and the judges are in the house! The pale blonde who was trying out may not have been as good as last year's soul princess Paulini, but she wasn't that bad and Ian "Dicko" Dickson's typical dispensation was, shall we say, a little unnecessary. Then again, that's entertainment Australian Idol style: cruel to the point of crushing, yet sometimes graced by enough talent to make a wannabe like Dicko, who has all the Midlands Pommie charm of a wristwatch-flogging nasty from an old episode of Minder, sit up and take notice. By the way, in case you've been dead or worse, there were more news stories in the past few weeks on the fact Dicko cut his hair than there have been hopeful contestants waiting in the rain. Losing the mullet certainly makes his head look like a box, which is great for TV. Fellow judge Mark Holden is back too, with his slightly psychotic, greasy leer and the desperate search for a buzzword like "touchdown" that might leave his claw marks on pop culture for another year. He's a sentimental bloke, the kind who sobs to Somalian folk songs when not savaging the natives for listening to the radio (poor old Liban from the last series). One day he'll be as witty as Dicko and knock that bastard off his perch. Marcia Hines sits between them, the queen, getting glassy-eyed in the ballads, waiting for her close-ups like a true pro. Every now and then she makes up for Dicko and Holden's cruelty with a kind comment, but mostly she takes lascivious delight in their savagery while keeping her own fingernails clean. We'll endure a song from her at the end of the series and the odd funky sista outburst of "Dat's what I'm takin' 'bout!" These are nasty profiles. But the hanging judges should be able to cop it. If nothing else they're adults, while those they enjoy humiliating are usually children. And there is another side: Dicko is without doubt the most astute of the judges, almost always on point with his criticisms and advice, though the need to create gratuitous drama for TV can poison his frank wisdom. Holden's shrill desire to be hip also creates an opening for quirks, an unpredictability in his judgments that lets offbeat figures through the machine. And Hines is one of the great pop survivors deserving enough to play her high hand with the lifelines she throws to the insult-buffeted teenagers. It has to be said, too, that apart from the bizarre and deluded qualities of many contestants, there are those with enough vanity to weather a panzer divisions of insults and still walk off looking for a mirror. Truth be known, Australian Idol has made bigger stars of the judges than most of the contestants. The disaster that was Popstars indicates Australian Idol has a winning formula. But there's also a slick and confident feel in every other department too, from the knockabout hosting by James Mathison and Andrew G to what must be one of the best editing jobs in the business. Can you imagine piecing it together? Unlike return series duds such as The Block, you get the impression Australian Idol has plenty of life left. Perhaps because it's a classic talent contest in reality TV disguise – Pot of Gold with a steady cam and a groove. The big question is: Will the program unearth another Guy Sebastian and, if it does, what will it do with them? While Shannon Noll has proved himself more of a stayer, his four-by-two qualities were always going to be an easier fit. The depth of talent from last year and overlooked figures such as Bec and Leroy (yeah they're so temporarily big their first names rule us) indicates that Australian Idol's real problem is having better and more than it can cope with. - Mark Mordue www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,10212633%5E12284,00.html

No holding Idol back July 24, 2004 WITHIN 24 hours of arriving from Los Angeles, Cosima De Vito was on the stage, doing what she does best. The Perth girl, best known for her nodule dysfunction during the countdown to the previous Australian Idol series, is now based in Sydney and returned to the country a week earlier than initially planned. Digging deep . . . Cosima De Vito at the Jeans for Genes Day charity auction dinner. Cosima performed at the Jeans for Genes charity auction gala dinner on Thursday night. Guests were the first Aussies to hear her new single, One Night Without You, an upbeat song with a latin flavour written by Dianne Warren, as well as some of her Idol favourites, including Tina Turner's River Deep, Mountain High. Wide-eyed and jet lagged when Confidential caught up with her, Cosima said she hadn't been able to stop smiling. "It was more than I imagined, Dianne was a breath of fresh air," Cosima said. "Since I was a child I always thought it would be great if she did me a song and now she's done my whole album," she said. Guests digged deep at the celebrity jeans auction, the highest price on the night was $25,000 handed over for Mick Jagger's jeans, which were painted on by artist Nafisa Naomi. Tom Jones and David Helfgott's denims were an equal second - although less than half the price of Jagger's at $12,000. Aussie sweetheart and songstress Delta Goodrem's jeans surprisingly didn't even come close to the $26,000 record set by Ian Thorpe's bum-huggers last year. Goodrem's pair raised $11,000 and were later donated to a young girl with a genetic illness. Other guests at the auction, which raises funds for the Children's Medical Research Institute, included charity king Kamahl, musicman Glenn A. Baker, designer Charlie Brown and the young-again Lady Sonia McMahon. Also doing the rounds at the auction was the woman better known as Tina Sparkles, Sonia Kruger, young crooner Hayden Tee, Seven newsreader Chris Bath and the man recently better known for his flak jacket, Jim Waley. AHHHH!!!
If I hear that just once more....
Do BMG really know what they are doing? I'm starting to get the jitters now. And Sept is too far away!!
He's been on American Idol 3, New Zealand Idol, now Indonesian Idol. It's all very well them promoting him like mad overseas but what about here?

i doubt they can top last years talent too...but i hope they can match it! ...Australian Idol has a winning formula. But there's also a slick and confident feel in every other department too, from the knockabout hosting by James Mathison and Andrew G to what must be one of the best editing jobs in the business. Can you imagine piecing it together? where's all that extra footage dammit!!!

What are they saying here?? Based on a lot of assumptions. An easier fit with whom??? Has anyone checked up on what Guy has been up to or are they assuming that he has run out of puff. IF ONLY BMG WOULD TELL THEM
Anyway wont they get a nice surprise to see that our Aussie Idol has lots and lots and lots more to give yet and it'll just keep getting better and better.

I don't know if I'm looking at it the wrong way, but the impression I get from what they have done post Idol is that Guy is attempting to set himself up for a serious long term musical career whilst Shannon is looking to milk his current popularity for all its worth.
Guy has been attempting to create the CD that he wants to create and Shannon has been appearing at every small town with a hall. I am certain Shannon has earnt more money in the short term, but me may not survive long term.
That just my opinion, only time will tell.

I see your point of view but firstly Shannon is setting himself up for a long term singing career too. And he is striking now while the going's hot. Why not?? He is going about it brilliantly too. He has a lot of support in these small towns and instead of them travelling hours to come to the big cities to see him perform he is going to them, sort of solidifying their support. He has mentioned it as much. His touring is gruesome but I think it will pay off in the long run. Not sure about who has earned more cos Guy is selling overseas as well and one observation too I noticed it is the Guy fans who are doing the comparison between the two in recent times and being very vocal about it ..I know the frustration of not hearing anything or seeing anything about Guy is kicking in and jealousy and resentment seems to rear its head and Shannon seems to be the one who cops it....his success has everything to do with it. I hope you will ALL do not begrudge him his success because he is doing what anyone would do in his shoes. He deserves it as much as the next peron and has worked hard enough for it. You all should not whinge and have more faith in your idol ..there is a lot of room for both you know.

GUY is actually AUSTRALIA'S Idol!!! Anywho...there has been heaps of GUY bashing (and recently too) on this site and on the AI2 site. I am pretty sure that this is what people are responding to. So you might want to tell THESE people the same thing...STOP IT!! Goes both ways unfortunately.

We miss him...but are there for him COMPLETELY!! We would like to see him more but we are keeping ourselves amused with pages and pages of pics, DVD's, and CD!! And we do have faith in Guy. But putting your faith in a company like BMG to get it right is another thing (they really messed up passing over Paulini and possibly Cosima - soon to be tested). They could mess it up for Guy too if they miss time it or fail to take advantage of the right moment. Media reports like this reflect the general impression that is found amongst the people out there (as opposed to those in the know in here) and this is not really a great comment. And we didn't start the comparison between Guy and Shannon, by the way, the reporter did. We commented on his comment, and my comment was a bit tongue in cheek at that too. Shannon is doing great. We just want the same for our Guy. ;D

Thanks MaybeNext...I know you and Reggie are not those whingers but there ARE others around who are. There was one who even said he wants to ban Channel 10 because he does not want to watch the advert for Shannons Up Close N Personal....how petty!!!
I did not say that you hve no faith but rather you should have MORE faith cos like all things, the music industry goes up and down and when Guy's next single and album comes out, Australia will definitely hear more of him. Just have to wait it out. I have a lot of time for Guy cos he probably knew about Shannon's shortcomings with the amount of time they spent together but he has never said one bad thing about Shannon ..ever. At every chance, he gave Shannon the thumbs up.
I may not like his music but he's alright by me.
As for Guy bashing you all be ready for some more cos you are gonna get more...especially from fans of this year's finalists... and you worry about Shannon fans hehehehe ! Except for one post in AI2 , did not see any from Shannon fans recently. If there were, I think these fans should not live in the past.
And I never believed BMG passed over Paulini and Cosima. I think they were offered conttracts but which were never taken up cos they were too narrow. So to save everyone's face, BMG just said they did not sign them...just an opinion anyway. It just does not make any commercial sense to bypass them and go straight to Millsy.
Did you ever think that Guy is doing his promotions overseas cos that is exactly what he wanted? BMG would have given him some suggestions and some leeway to what he wanted to do and he agreed.
I am not defending BMG by the way.

You are alright by me too Guest Shannon has never said a bad word about Guy either because they are mates. They shared an amazing experience together but it is over now and they are going in their own directions trying to make their way and be successful in the musical world - a very hard thing to do!!! Although I favour Guy's style of music (actually I am rather obsessed and absolutely adore him) I respect Shannon as a performer and an artist and am looking forward to seeing his tv special. Loyalty and friendship are very important in life - these two blokes have shown it through the whole idol process and after...I admire them immensely for that

Thanks guest for your comments. Nice to hear thoughts on Guy from on outsider (not an OG ;D). I remember reading an article in which Paulini said after she was voted out of Idol, she never got one phone call from a single record company. She said she was very disappointed and at one point considered giving singing as a career away. On the comments from that interview I can only gather that BMG did indeed pass her over. I also seem to remember another article about Cosima in which she said she was not offered anything for some time and in the end a well known label (not BMG - but is can't remember what it was) offered her a fairly tight deal and she turned it down prefering to go her own way. Still reports in newspapers can be wrong, misquoted or poorly remembered so maybe you are right.
