Australia loves Idol even more

Fears that Australia was all Idol-ed out were put to rest last week as Australian Idol 2 debuted to higher figures than the first series.

According to the latest Oztam survey, both episodes of the Channel Ten talent search scored more than 1.7 million viewers each.

Last week also saw a rise in popularity overall for the reality genre. Big Brother scored two entries in the top 20, whilst The Block rose to over 1.7 million viewers.

The national top TV 20 shows were:

Become our first local Idol

OUR local talents include everything from football, woodchopping and even school debating, but now it's time for our best singers to strut their stuff, with the excitement already building for the very first Bombala Idol competition.

Those readers who have seen the national Australian Idol competition on television will understand how the contest works, with BLAC Inc, the Blue Light Disco Committee and the Bombala RSL Club working closely together to keep the event similar to the TV hit.

Of course a panel of judges will be on board, and spectators will have the chance to vote for their favourite Bombala Idol as a series of performances are held over several weeks.

More details explaining the running of the competition will be printed at a later date, but for now all readers need to know is that they can enter right now for their chance to become the first Bombala Idol.

If you think you have the talent, simply pop into the RSL Club and leave your name and contact details with the bar staff, and your on your way to local fame.

And fame's not all, there is a most impressive swag of prizes up for grabs, with the Bombala Idol picking up a DVD and television package for first place, the runner up scoring a television set, and our third best singer being rewarded with a DVD player.

The first Bombala Idol contest performances will take place on August 20, then proceeding on to September 10, and October 29, with the final battle being played out on November 19.

The local singers are able to choose from 8000 songs including pop, rock, and country classics, with hits from the 50s right through to today's favourites sure to see big crowds gathering to see what our local talents have to offer.

ARE there any stars in the Manning just waiting to be discovered?

The community is being invited to audition for a new variety show that will be filmed in Taree in November.


Singing up enthusiasm for All Stars: Pat Mariner, Brendan Smart and John Mariner performed for school students yesterday as they launched the All Stars variety show and 10-week academy and development program for young people with talent.

The Australian All Stars Variety Show team is in town this week, promoting the show and launching an academy and development initiative for young people.

The Taree visit began with a performance at Chatham Primary School yesterday, a thank you after a group of students from the school travelled to Wagga Wagga recently for the first filming of Australian All Stars.

The school was yesterday treated to some musical numbers before hearing about the new variety show and a 10-week academy program which teaches students about television and the performing industry.

Taree will host the second filming on November 13, but before that auditions will be held on a date to be confirmed in October.

Talented local people will have the chance to win a place on the show where they will vie with other budding stars for a contract in the professional field of their dreams.

Among the celebrities planning to make the trip to Taree for the filming are rugby league great Bill Harrigan, Peter Ryan and Rebecca LaVauney of Australian Idol, Lex Marinos of Kingswood Country and Ashlea from Big Brother.

Rebecca LaVauney is currently in town as part of the promotion and will be performing at Taree City Centre tomorrow at 4pm.
