Shannon, king of the court July 19, 2004 HE may not be much of a dancer but Shannon Noll had all the right moves on the tennis court yesterday. Ace ... Shannon Noll takes to the court The Australian Idol runner-up partnered Wally Masur against champion surfer Layne Beachley and Sandon Stolle to take out the Lexus Australian Pro-Celebrity Tennis Challenge at the end of the week-long Australian Festival of Tennis in Noosa. The match was a hard-fought affair, ending in a tie-breaker. "He's [Noll] a pretty handy tennis player," said one observer. "He's got a natural ability." Another natural on the court was Beachley who apparently toyed with a career in tennis in her younger days but opted for surfing instead. With six world championships under her belt, she obviously made the right decision. After getting some tips on the court from Stolle, Beachley promised to return the favour in kind by helping her partner find his feet in the waves. dailytelegraph.news.com.au/story.jsp?sectionid=1266&storyid=1642700

Monday, 19th July 2004. Noll shines on and off court at Noosa's festival of tennis Idol star and Masur win pro-celebrity challenge over Beachley, Stolle SHANNON Noll did not just "learn to fly'', he soared to victory with tennis legend Wally Masur in yesterday's procelebrity challenge in Noosa. The Australian Idol runnerup, who released new single Learn to Fly two weeks ago, showed his racquet prowess early with three out of three wins in the round robin and then a 5-4 win in the final against Laguna Noosa's Layne Beachley and Sandon Stolle. Microphones on the players added an entertaining dimension to the Australian Festival of Tennis pro-celebrity challenge. But it was Noll's speedy court coverage and swift net returns combined with Masur's steady groundstrokes that lifted the Ambition team above the field. "The competition's been pretty even,'' Noll said. "Everyone had as much chance of winning as anyone else. "The pros have been taking it easy on us though. If they chose to cut loose they'd quickly cut us to ribbons. '' Noll was also the star attraction off the court, drawing a long line for his prized autograph. Surf champ Beachley, surprisingly handy with a tennis racquet, also shared the spotlight with Davis Cup player Stolle. "It's been close on the court but lots of fun,'' she said. Jamie Durie, host of reality television shows The Block and Backyard Blitz, said he'd take up any excuse to get to Queensland. "I'm a lot more confident than last year,'' he said. www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au/data/full_stories/july_04/19/6.html

Millsy a smash hit Tuned in: Rob Mills belts out a tune on Saturday night. Wild times: Millsy fans go wild at their hero's concert. Rock on: Rob Mills was a smash hit for all his fans.Pictures: Verity Lewis By Roger Oldridge July 19 2004 Shepparton News In scenes similar to The Beatles' visit to Australia 40 years earlier, Rob Mills successfully wooed fans at Shepparton's Eastbank Centre on Saturday night. With legions of adoring teenage girls screaming louder than Mills' music, the almost Australian Idol was officially a smash hit. As impressed as the Shepparton fans were with Mills, the man himself was equally impressed with them. "The crowd was just awesome," Mills said. "It was a phenomenal experience, everyone just got so in to it." The Eastbank performance was just the second concert in his two-month national tour, but Mills said there were some similarities between the concerts and the Melbourne pub circuit he has been playing for the past couple of years. "It is pretty much the same because you're entertaining, but in the pubs you're singing covers so everyone knows the words," he said. "There was one guy at Friday night's concert (at Barwon Heads) who knew every word and the album has only been out a couple of weeks." In Saturday night's concert, Mills played all the songs from his debut album Up All Night, as well as covers he had performed on the show which launched his career, Australian Idol. In his first attempt playing live concerts to screaming fans, Mills and his band members can be expected to make a couple of mistakes, but to counteract the problem, the singer said he has introduced a fining system. "Every time someone stuffs up it costs them $5, so after the first performance there's already about $1000 in the kitty," Mills joked. ob Mills belts out a tune on Saturday night. Monday, 19th July 2004. Strong crowd MORE than 2000 people turnedout for yesterday's pro-celebrity challenge and the final day of the Australian Festival of Tennis at Noosa Springs. Event director Alex Watson said the 2004 event was "bigger and stronger in entries, performances and interest''. He said auction items alone had raised $18,000 for the Starlight Foundation before adding gate or sweep monies. Among the crowd, the 38 ball kids were beside themselves working with celebrities. Eumundi's Hannah Sharp, 10, and Doonan's Jaimee Gilbertson, 8, couldn't believe their luck when Shannon Noll said hello to them. Colin and Elizabeth Southee, who were in Mark Edmondson's tennis club in Sydney, moved to Noosa Springs eight days ago. "It's interesting to see the mixture of skills,'' she said. Barb Walsh kept a keen eye on all the celebrities. "I went to get my tennis shoes out last week and found the dog had chewed them. "So I got a new pair and I felt on fire today. '' Mark Beretta and Steve Liebmann, who face off daily witbreakfast shows on channels Seven and Nine, had a lively match with respective tennis legends Allan Stone and Tony Roche. The Liebmann-Roche team took out a tiebreaker to win five games to four.
