Herald Sun www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,9805426%255E2902,00.html Paulini Eyes the singles chart 11jun04 ALL eyes will be on how former Australian Idol favourite Paulini Curuenavuli (right) goes when her single Angel Eyes is released on July 5. It goes to radio on Monday. Paulini, as she is now known after ditching the surname, wasn't picked up by record label BMG after Idol, in favour of Guy Sebastian, Shannon Noll, Robert "Millsy" Mills and Courtney Act. She's now signed to Sony, and there will be a big advertising push for her. Paulini was a fan favourite on Idol last year and we tip her single is going to be a big hit. The other popular act that BMG didn't sign, Cosima De Vito, is working on an independent release. c:\docume~1\user\mydocu~1\email\attach\0,1658,333700,00.jpg;[/img]

Songs we love to hear June 11, 2004 MAJOR record labels are set to break out the cheque books as music fans' appetite for Australian tunes reaches record levels. Albums by local artists, including Kasey Chambers, Pete Murray, Delta Goodrem, the John Butler Trio, Jet and Australian Idol have commanded the No.1 spot on the ARIA charts for 16 of 23 weeks this year. And they are selling hundreds of thousands of copies, with Goodrem's Innocent Eyes now at more than one million sales and Pete Murray at more than 250,000. Eskimo Joe, Spiderbait, Mercury 4, Xavier Rudd, The Cat Empire, The Dissociatives and J Wess are also enjoying Top 40 popularity with their latest releases and achieving gold and platinum sales. Sony Music Australia, responsible for Murray and Goodrem's chart-topping success, will introduce a new talent scout initiative this month to beat their rivals to untapped acts. The Racket Room will be staffed by teen music fans who will search for the next big thing via gigs, online and demo submissions. Sony Artist and Repertoire director Michael Taylor said recently: "The Racket Room will serve as an A&R research team and track music trends as they develop in real time." "It is a junior A&R team made up of six trendspotters working on an intern basis." ARIA head Stephen Peach said Australian artists now account for more than 25 per cent of all albums sold here. Mr Peach said a greater awareness of Australian music fostered by mainstream media had contributed to the current explosion of popularity. Fans have discovered the emerging acts via healthy word-of-mouth buzz or live performance rather than marketing-driven hype.
