Our Aussie Idols
Wednesday, 5 May 2004
THEY arrived before dawn, waited in queues for hours on end and then sat in a waiting room for longer still just to grab their 20 second chance at fame, with the three local singers who recently tried out for Australian Idol having thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Michael Cootes, Katrina Goldstraw and Jemma Hall headed to Bruce Stadium to audition for Australian Idol on April 22, with the young singers each hopeful of gaining their spot on the show and then competing their way to the top on-screen.
Michael explains that he and Katrina arrived at the venue around 4.30am in the morning, taking their place in a queue that still had around 800 people in front of them, despite their early start.
Auditions did not start until 8.30am, with our locals slowly moving up the lines to finally get themselves registered and fitted with a wristband, a process which took another hour.
From here they made their way into Bruce Stadium and sat in the foyer with around 300 other hopefuls, waiting another hour or so for their numbers to be called out amongst eight others.
When they were finally called upon they then joined these other singers to move to another floor of the building, with the ten going one by one into a smaller room to sing for just 20 seconds in front of two judges.
With time being of the essence, these judges gave a simple yes or no to each entrant, with all three of our locals unfortunately missing out on going on to the next level, and being a little disappointed not to receive any helpful criticism.
It seems that they weren't the only ones, however, with only 55 of 3,500 entrants in Canberra actually getting through to the third level of auditions which are made in front of the cameras.
Nonetheless Michael assures us that trying out for Australian Idol was still great fun, with all three meeting up with some interesting people and getting a great laugh out of James from Channel V who compered the day.
Despite being unsuccessful in the Australian Idol auditions, all three locals plan to continue singing, with Michael and Katrina set to entertain us with their new band, Detour, while Jemma will eagerly continue her studies in music.
