Melbourne gears up for Logies
The Logie awards will be presented in Melbourne tonight.

A new feature this year will be the red carpet for fans to see the arrival of local and international stars for the awards presentation.

Emma Nolan, editor of TV Week, says the who is who of television has been invited.

"The hottest TV faces from all the networks, there will be international guests, there'll be Anastasia and Michael Buble. There'll be Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll, so yes there will be some hot faces there," she said.

"I think all eyes will be on Delta and Mark Philippoussis to be honest, but then there'll be lots of the most glamorous TV stars will be walking up the red carpet."

Long-running Logies vow to speed it up

A FLOCK of local and international stars – including legendary US comic Mel Brooks, actor Georgie Parker, backyard blitzer Jamie Durie and singers Delta Goodrem and Anastacia – will stroll the red carpet at tonight's 46th annual TV Week Logie Awards.

Other famous faces expected at the ceremony include Kath and Kim (Jane Turner and Gina Riley), Paul Hogan, Michael Caton, Tammin Sursok and Lisa Chappell.
Guests will be entertained by Australian Idol's Shannon Noll and Guy Sebastian, who will sing together, famed performance troupe Cirque du Soleil and singers Michael Buble and Anastacia.

Veteran actors Charles "Bud" Tingwell and Lucky Grills will reprise their comic sleuth roles from last year's ceremony, while Logie icon Bert Newton will return to present the gold after last year's public dispute over an appearance fee.

"We're really happy to have Bert back. There is no appearance fee," Logies executive producer Peter Wynne said.

Despite a reputation for running over time, Logies executives promised tonight's 46th bash will be the paciest in years.

"Last year, we still recorded 2.8 million viewers as late as 11.40pm. But the feedback is people want a fun show that is kept moving so I'm going to pick up the tempo," Wynne said.

"I'm not going to demand winners get through their speeches quickly, but I am trying to shave 20 minutes off the overall length of last year's coverage."

Viewers will still have to wait until about 11.20pm to discover the winner of the coveted gold Logie.

Nominees for gold include Lisa Chappell, John Wood, Rove McManus, Georgie Parker and pop starlet Delta Goodrem.

Goodrem will attend the gala night with Australian tennis ace and new boyfriend Mark Philippoussis.

Catriona Rowntree from Nine's Getaway program will host the evening's red carpet special.

She rates Goodrem as "a shoo-in" for the prestigious gold Logie.

Rowntree, who takes a herbal remedy to calm her pre-show nerves, will wear a gown designed by Collette Dinnigan along with Louis Vuitton shoes flown from Hong Kong especially for the event.

Rove wins Gold Logie for second year

TV TALK show host Rove McManus dominated the 46th Annual TV Week Logie Awards, leaving Delta Goodrem to go home empty-handed.

McManus won the coveted Gold Logie for the second year running, and also repeated his success last year by taking the Silver Logie for most popular TV presenter.

Meanwhile his Network Ten chat show, Rove Live , again won most popular light entertainment/comedy program.

"Everybody loves Rove," TV Week editor Emma Nolan said tonight.

"This proves once again what a popular all-rounder he is.

"He is charming, talented, and not to mention, modest.

"No one was more surprised by this win than Rove himself."


Goodrem was heavily favoured to take out the Gold Logie for most popular personality on television, the top honour on TV's night of nights.

Also nominated were Lisa Chappell, George Parker and John Wood. It was Wood's eighth consecutive Gold Logie nomination.

Goodrem cleaned up at the ARIA awards last year and was also expected to ride a wave of voter sympathy following her treatment for Hodgkin's disease.

The former Neighbours star, accompanied tonight by tennis ace Mark Philippoussis, also missed out on the Silver Logie for most popular actress.

Instead the Silver Logie went to McLeod's Daughters star Chappell.

The Silver Logie for most popular male actor went to Aaron Jeffery, also of Nine Network's McLeod's Daughters .

Mcleod's Daughters itself won the Silver Logie for most popular Australian program, and was also voted most popular Australian drama series.

Home and Away stars Kip Gamblin and Isabel Lucas were awarded the Logies for the most popular new male and female talent.

The most popular lifestyle program went to Nine's Backyard Blitz .

Ten's Australian Idol won the Logie for the most popular reality program while Nine's Footy Show AFL was voted the most popular sports program on Australian television.

The Logie for most outstanding drama series went to Ten's Secret Life of Us , while star of the show Deborah Mailman won most outstanding actress in a drama series.

Most outstanding actor in a drama series was Ray Barrett, for his performance in After the Deluge , which also won for most outstanding miniseries/telemovie.

The award for most outstanding comedy program was tied, with the ABC's Kath and Kim and CNNNN each collecting a Logie.

While the Logies are usually a happy hunting ground for the commercial networks, the ABC also won for most outstanding news coverage and most outstanding public affairs report.

In all 26 awards were handed out tonight, 15 voted by TV Week readers and the other 11 chosen by industry panels.

Early interest on the red carpet at Melbourne's Crown Entertainment Complex tonight was provided by performer and presenter Susie Elelman.

She usually causes a stir for her clothing, but tonight drew attention by unveiling a freshly shaven head.

"This year is my 30th year in television and I'm about to turn the big 50 so I have been training with Jeff Fenech for 18 months to get a body like this," she said.

A number of television personalities also used the Logie Awards to make a political statement, donning green and gold ribbons to register the entertainment industry's concern over Australia's free trade negotiations with the US.

Hundreds line up for tickets

SHANNON Noll's trip to the north-west may have been fleeting but he certainly made an impression – if demand for tickets to his second Tamworth concert are anything to go by.



Worth the wait: Amanda Leonard and Amanda Barnden lining up for tickets to see Shannon Noll live at the West Tamworth League Club next month.

Tickets for the all-ages concert, to be held at the West Tamworth League Club on May 1, were on sale from 10am on Saturday, however, some eager fans just couldn't wait.

"I arrived at the club at 6am on Saturday and there were already people outside the door waiting to buy a ticket," Wests' supervisor Ken Thompson said yesterday.

"Once the initial line of people went through, that was it, but we had a lot of people ordering over the phone by credit card.

"I'd say there's a couple of hundred tickets left but with 30 or 40 already sold by 10am Sunday, I can't see them lasting long."

Mr Thompson said the delay in announcing the second concert had caused younger Shannon fans to "panic a bit", with the club receiving petitions from local school students containing thousands of signatures.

"It's good to see the promoters are thinking of the younger

people," he said.

"We've had people buying tickets from all over the place."

The open-age, alcohol-free concert will kick off at 3.30pm and tickets cost $30 each. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Wests' chief executive officer Rod Laing told The Leader last week the open-age concert was "always going to happen", however, the club had been "played out by the promoter who kept coming up with all types of excuses".
