Wannabe idols can do it closer to home
Monday, 5 April 2004
ARMIDALE'S next big things are urged to strut their stuff for the TV blockbuster Australian Idol, with local auditions being held in Tamworth on April 14.
Tamworth is the first stop on a whirlwind Idol audition tour that will sweep across every state and territory in Australia, in a bid to expose the wannabes and unearth the country's next superstar.
Auditions will be held at Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre, from 8.30am.
More than 25,000 hopefuls showed up to audition for the first series and producers Grundy Television is confident that figure will be eclipsed second time around.
And for the first time, Hobart, Darwin, Canberra and Tamworth have been included as audition locations.
"Last series' runner-up Shannon Noll came from a country town in NSW, and that makes it clear there's talent all over the nation – it doesn't just come from capital cities on the east coast.
"We want to find that talent, and we'll travel to do it,' executive producer Greg Beness said.
Network Ten's head of production Stephen Tate said he was proud of the fact that last year Australian Idol discovered the very best talent in the nation,” he said.
Judges Ian 'Dicko' Dickson, Marcia Hines and Mark Holden will be present at every audition centre, with cameras capturing the elation, heartbreak and high emotion.
The first series was a ratings bonanza with the finale attracting more than three million viewers. Winner Guy Sebastian and runner-up Shannon Noll have become household names, landing recording contracts with BMG Records and reaching unprecedented heights on Australian music charts.
