The 10 remaining New Zealand Idol contestants got a glimpse of fame last night when Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian appeared as a guest judge on the show.
Entering to screams from the studio audience, Sebastian gave the contestants good advice when he recommended they "remain ultra humble".
Earlier, Sebastian met his potential New Zealand counterparts in the New Zealand Idol house, where they sang Bob Marley's One Love.
Competition is heating up, and some contestants lifted their performances to try to impress viewers before today's elimination round.
One star of the show was "Big" Dave Houma, 28, who sang Hard to Find Her by Christchurch group Zed. The smoothest guy in the competition wooed the judges as much as he seduced the crowd.
"You had the audience eating out of the palm of your hand," said judge Fiona McDonald.
Sebastian was moved to comment: "You exude this joy," and fellow judge Paul Ellis said Houma had made the song his own.
Michael Murphy, 17, from Taupo, sang Here without You by Three Doors Down. Sebastian was impressed with his choice, naming him Rock Brother.
Eddie Gaiger, 25, of Coromandel, performed Six Feet Under by Creed.
Ellis' verdict: "I can't stand Creed. Unfortunately, that performance didn't make me want to like them any more."
Eighteen-year-old Jessie Cassin, who gained entry to this round with a wild card chosen on Saturday, made the most of her second chance.
She sang the Bic Runga pop song Something Good, but it was her attire that caused more discussion among the judges than her singing.
Her blinding yellow, formless top did not impress Ellis.
"You have a serious styling issue. Think about what you're wearing."
McDonald countered with: "That looks great."
