Noll's No.1 guy
February 03, 2004
THE last time Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll were in Melbourne was in late November, during their whirlwind nationwide tour.
Shannon Noll is at No.1 on the music charts.
Yesterday, the two Australian Idol finalists were back in town, both with No. 1 hits under their belts.
Noll's cover of What About Me went straight to No. 1 yesterday, and is selling by the truckload.
He found out yesterday in a text message from his record label, BMG.
"Mate, it's amazing," he said of the No. 1 hit.
"Just to hear it on the radio and that sort of stuff is something a lot of people talk about. It's like something you see on movies and don't actually ever think it could happen to you."
In competing in Australian Idol, Noll wanted to make sure he set himself up well to provide for his family and two young sons, Blake and Cody, after struggling because of the drought in Condobolin, rural NSW.
He is well on the way to doing just that.
"It's taken a lot of pressure off," Noll said.
"Every other time I've stayed in a hotel, you never go near the bar fridge. Now you just go, get a drink."
Noll has moved to Sydney with his family, but misses home.
"My brother rang the other day and said it had just rained," he said. "Just the smell of the soil, it's great, you miss out on that beautiful, fresh smell in the city."
As for Adelaide boy Sebastian, he has barely had time off to think, other than a couple of days to furnish his new Sydney apartment.
He wrote his next single, All I Need Is You, about an ex-girlfriend, and already it is topping request lists at radio stations around the country.
The single will be out on February 23.
It is well documented that Sebastian is a Christian and a virgin, and he's happy to be a role model.
"It's just a great thing to just give another option," he said.
"Anybody in the public eye, you're going to be a role model, whether it be a good or bad one.
"I have just thought I'm going to be myself and be the best I can be, and it's a good thing when you state what you want to be publicly, because it gives you something to be accountable to."
Sebastian and Noll will join the other finalists, plus Courtney Act, on the Australian Idol tour at Rod Laver Arena on Friday and Saturday night.
Fellow BMG labelmate Rob "Millsy" Mills will be there, and we're told he does a mean duet with Act of Kids by Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams.
