Idols steal the show

IF public opinion at the Arias is anything to go by, Guy Sebastian should be installed as the favourite to win Australian Idol at every bookmaker in Australia tomorrow.
The Australian Idol finalists got their first taste of super-stardom/AAP
The deafening roar the South Australian received as he emerged from his limousine was enough to upstage even the country’s biggest rock and pop stars on the red carpet at the 17th annual Aria awards – and he is yet to release a record.
Indeed it was Idol that stole the show, with judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson receiving the biggest cheer prior to the arrival of the Idols themselves.
With his wife Mel in tow, Dicko admitted his own fame is something he’s been struggling to come to terms with.
“I find it all a bit embarrassing,” he said, adding that the talent of those he has judged over the past few weeks far exceeds his own.
Fellow judge Marcia Hines was also well received, but Mark Holden – chastised last week for comments he made about ousted hopeful Levi Kereama – slipped by almost unnoticed, perhaps sheepishly trying to avoid the media glare that has lit up his life over the past fortnight.
It might, though, have been something to do with his arrival coinciding with that of one Delta Goodrem – which in itself was a stroke of genius on Holden’s part. But take nothing away from Delta – she was exquisite.
Dressed in a floor length pink frock scattered with diamantes – her hands and feet sparkling from similarly jewelled treatment – the 18-year-old, nominated for a record 10 awards, glided down the carpet.
She was a picture of serenity that illuminated the predominantly black fashion senses of the night.
As she beamed for the adoring cameras, the only sign of her cancer was a short shaggy-layered wig.
Her mother had admitted her daughter’s dream as a child was the walk the red carpet, and tonight, that dream came true.
