Idol gang fires up fans

LEVI, Shannon, Guy, Pauline, Robert and Cosima: the Australian Idol countdown has slipped into top gear, and it appears Australia cares – a lot.
In a very Big Brother-style following, office chatter is abuzz on a Tuesday mornings after a knock-out show, the six remaining finalists are being mobbed at public appearances and full-blown fan clubs are beginning to emerge.
There's major support for Shannon, the all-Aussie farmer from Condobolin.
As well as for Pauline, the diva from Bankstown, and Cosima, who has gone from a bad perm to sexy mini-skirts in a matter of weeks.
Robert, the pub-anthem party boy, gets good press and there's a lot of talk about Guy, the church singer with the afro.
Combined, the kids are attracting hundreds of thousands of new viewers each week as judgement day draws closer.
When the show first aired in July, their cringe-a-minute audition tapes grabbed the attention of 1.9 million viewers.
And although subsequent episodes lost viewers to Nine's Friends, Idol has become a helluva lot more juicy.
Marcia Hines now cries all the time – real tears – for the contestants she chose five months ago.
Fellow judge Mark Holden has gone seriously loopy, making some crazy comments. And Dicko? Well, he's still being a bit of a Dicko. It probably doesn't hurt ratings that, funnily enough, the show has one contestant left from each Australian state. Confidential took an exclusive peep inside Idol HQ at the weekend when the six finalists were given copies of their first CD single, released today. Rise Up, written by Mark Holden, came in just behind Pink's and Kylie's new singles on radio last week.
