Finally, Idol has girl power

IT was beginning to look like Australian Idol would feature a final full of men until Lauren Buckley and Cle trebled the chick factor in one hit by passing through from round four last night.
Round 4 winners Lauren Buckley and Cle.
After a Sunday audition full of scathing comments and tears, the pair shone through the gloom to impress not only the three judges, but also the voting public.
Lauren, at 17, is the youngest remaining contestant in the competition but her performance of John Lennon's Imagine was as mature and polished as anything the television audience has seen thus far.
Judge Dread - Ian "Dicko" Dickson - said of Lauren that she was "everything he'd dreamed of" when he got involved with the Channel Ten show, and it looks like the voters have agreed with him.
Fellow judges Mark Holden and Marcia Hines added to the overwhelming praise, while also standing Cle out from an otherwise very ordinary crowd.
Lauren, whose mother has been with her very step of the way, cried proud tears on Sunday night, which prompted comments from Marcia.
"I've just lost my mum, so you keep you're mum around you as much you can," Marcia said, before admitting Lauren's performance had "melted" her.
The explanations as to why so few girls had made it through to the final have as yet been unforthcoming.
Until last night, only Kelly Cavuoto - the resident "rock chick" - had been successful.
Dicko had put it down to the "g-factor" at previous auditions - his theory that the grannies, girls and gays of Australia were influencing the voting figures.
But if anything, it seems to be the fact that the girls, until now, simply haven't cut it.
Next week, a combination of male and female will attempt to join the final 10.
Courtney Act, a.k.a. Shane Jenek, will bring his drag act to the stage and, possibly, become the first transvestite in the world to compete in an Idol final.
