Idol gossip

How seriously, scarily addictive is Australian Idol? Triumph and humiliation wrapped into one delicious package. And part of its appeal is the outfits thrown together by our wannabe stars. At the auditions, there was way too much bra-as-top action (including an unfortunate Australian-flag bikini top modelled by a Brisbane girl who couldn't sing to save her life), an odd fascination with leather and a red jumpsuit that I am desperately trying to erase from my memory. But if you watched Sunday night's show, you'll know that a swat team of two wardrobe stylists and four hair and make-up artists has been called in to help the stars-in-the-making cut it on the fashion front, too. "We've got quite a bit of work to do," says Annebelle van Tongeren, who heads up the style team. "We're not going to ride roughshod over them but we'll offer suggestions." Van Tongeren says they're aiming for fresh, new looks - "not another Britney, Kylie or Robbie Williams". And the first thing she's going to attack is the feet. "There were some really scary shoe choices going on. That's going to change." And here's a tip if you're a fan of Chelsea (right). That tiara isn't long for this world. Trust me.

SIX down, two through, and only another 32 hopefuls to go. That's the tale at the tape of the first week of Australian Idol semi-finals.
Idol hopefuls Daniel Wakefield (top) and Peter Ryan have contrasting talents.
Peter Ryan and Daniel Wakefield found themselves voted through as finalists during Channel 10's latest chapter in reality TV last night.
With almost 10 years between them, the pair will now fight for a recording contract that will lead to fame and, possibly, fortune beyond their wildest dreams. They'll have a few others joining them in the coming weeks, but last night was all about them.
Peter, a 27-year-old pig farmer from Tabulam in New South Wales, appears set to become Australia's latest cult hero after Regina Bird. He only entered the competition after his girlfriend persuaded him he should have a shot.
Judge Marcia Hines was certainly grateful. She said on Sunday, after he had faultlessly belted out Richard Marx's Right Here Waiting: "On behalf of Australia, I want to thank your girlfriend for sending you to us."
Daniel, 19, from Penrith in New South Wales, sang You'll Never Walk Alone; the Jerry and the Pacemakers classic.
While his blond hair and toothpaste smile looks to have swayed the public at this early stage of the competition, Judge Dread Ian "Dicko" Dickson was utterly unimpressed.
"Turn around," he said to Daniel after his performance. "It's just that was so middle of the road, I thought I'd see white lines running down your back. I hated it. It was horrible. You're a good-looking lad. Why aren't you singing pop? You're singing old people's music. Get real."
But the G-Factor to which Dicko referred in the preamble to the results show last night - which meant the votes of "grannies, girlies and gays" - came through, and Daniel is already soaring in the charts of public opinion.
Among those that might have considered themselves unlucky to be dumped was Shannon Thompson, who sang a sparkling rendition of Stevie Wonder's Lately that had all three judges glowing.
Eli Diache was also praised by the panel for her choice of Sarah McLaughlin's Angel and made the top three, only to be told that, in fact, she was no better than the rest of the round one rejects - a first taste of the cruel nature of showbiz.
Next week's group of eight semi-finalists includes Sidney Maynard, Marc Stockley, Rebecca Tapia, Matt Chadwick, Kelly Cavuoto, Hailey Cramer, Axle Whitehead and Cosima De Vito, from which two will be selected to join Peter and Daniel.
