Is it thin-skinned for black people to take offence upon hearing a nigger reference, regardless of whether it is directed at them or not?

No, attackcat -- using 'gay' as an insult is as offensive as calling black people 'niggers' or referring to Jewish people as 'kikes'. Put yourself in the shoes of someone from a minority group and try to imagine how it feels to be insulted because of who you are.

If a black person uses the word nigga is that offensive? If a gay person says fag is that offensive? If a european says wog or spic is that offensive? I'll tell you what I think is offensive... Puritanical Parrots spouting and touting political correctness. That is offensive. You dont know that I am black white asian, and unless I hadnt already stated it elsewhere, gay. However, you tell me that what I am saying is an offence? Now that my friends, is offensive. Not to me personally, but to any free thinking persons sensibilities. Think about it, go on, try and have an original thought.....I dare you!

It's not political correctness, it's just a matter of showing respect for other people. If you can't manage that, you should probably just keep your views to yourself until you can

Yes Lench,
It is a shame but I'm a little too old for Idol. I'm not bitching about any of the contestants - merely stating fact - if I think some of them are not good then you can take it as fact because I know what I'm talking about. And having a record contract doesn't necessarily mean anything - Amity Dry's got one - need I cite further examples?
Lench - I know you must be Guy and I understand your anger - no one likes criticism - but then again the RSPCA has strict guidelines about asphyxiating cats.

Grow a brain, attackcat. People who are in those minority groups have the right to call themselves whatever they want to call themselves. I could go into the whole historical cultural movement of people reclaiming words that have been used to attack them, and instead making them a source of pride (e.g. 'queer', 'black', even 'girl'), but this isn't the time or place. If you are from Melbourne, you might remember the time Sam Newman wore 'blackface' make-up on 'The Footy Show' and couldn't understand why it was so deeply offensive to so many people, whatever race they were from. He, and you, don't understand that making a joke out of someone's ethnic background, gender, sexuality, age, or anything else like that leads to things like gay-bashing, the Ku Klux Klan and Hitler's final solution. I can hear you saying 'Oh, lighten up!' I'm more than happy to laugh along with you at things that are genuinely funny, but this is not a funny subject. Here is US comedian Chris Rock's take on it. It's from a 1997 book called 'Rock This', published by Hyperion. (It works just as well if you imagine it's Elton John and substitute 'fag'.) I just said "nigger" a whole lot. You probably think I shouldn't use the N-word, but that rule is just for white folks. Any black person can say "nigger" and get away with it. It's true. It's like calling your kid an idiot. Only you can call your kid that. Someone else calls your kid an idiot, there's a fight.
Yet some white people still wonder why black people can say "nigger" and they can't. Believe it or not, it's a very common question. I hear it all the time.
WHITE PERSON: Chris, can I say "nigger?" ME: Why would you even want to? WHITE PERSON: I don't mean anything bad by it. I've traveled the world, I got a yacht, I fucked Raquel Welch. Now, if I could just say "nigger," everything would be complete. ME: No. After I smack you upside the head everything will be complete.
"Nigger" is one of those words, like "fuck," that means different things depending on how you use it.
"I love you, nigger." Good. "You're my nigger." That's nice. "Shut up, nigger!" Not so good. "I'm going to kill you, nigger. " You better run.
Of course, "nigger" is just a word. White people could call us anything, like "butter." "Hey, you fucking butter! Pick that cotton, butter!"
The problem is that then they wouldn't be able to use the word "butter" for anything else. But they've got to use something. Next thing you know, white folks are sitting around the breakfast table with their eggs and toast, saying, "You're kidding. I can't believe it's not nigger."(I found this at condor.depaul.edu/~mwilson/extra/humor/rocknig.html)Now, can we please get back to talking about REALLY important things, like Australian Idol?

No, now I'm intrigued. What precisely do you feel is purist's problem, attackcat?

He is either a champion of the minority groups or a member of one....and that is of course just supposition on my part. I too am a member of a minority group such as those that purist has mentioned. I am also very aware and proud of my heritage. If purist is not a member of such a group then his criticism of my comments is nothing more than the speculation of a bored do-gooder and holds as much water as a sieve. If he is infact from a minority, then I believe that he needs to get over his persecution complex and realise that it is up to each individual on their merits, whatever they be to make their way through life and not start waving the minority banner around. The minority banner while held proudly and close to my heart pisses the majority off and also many of us in the minority too. Be proud because of it, not despite it and don't use others perceived ignorance as license to push your own baggage cart around. And that is what I believe the problem here is....of course I have been known to be wrong, every now and then
