Another hohum-dinger of a show with the big exception of Paulini who was simply STUNNING. Other good efforts this week were those from Kelly and Levi. Cosima was perhaps the disappointment while the others weren’t even in the race. But Paulini blew ALL of the away. So without further kebab wrapper stuck to my shoe - Let’s rip into ‘em!!:
COSIMA
The wide-eyed Eyebrowmeistress from WA – up first with “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” – one of your typical standard meaningless Whitney Houston numbers. Bad song choice and Dicko was spot on again. The trouble with Cosima is that after hearing her a few times one feels that one's ears are under some kind of verbal assault - a tad one dimensional. Cosima tried to build the song up in the latter part by opening her mouth so wide that one could have easily driven a semitrailer laden with low-fat Tim Tam’s through the screaming cavity. Needs to lift her game next show. Marcia was happy enough and Holds got it right saying that Cosima hasn’t extended herself. Disappointing but don’t write her off yet. 5/10
ROB
He’s a happy looking chap isn’t he - but happiness is not going to win you the Idol comp. Rob chose to bore us (i.e. those people who know about music) to death with “You Don’t Sing In the Shower to Me no More” – one of the all time boring number ones surely. Rob got away with commencing the non-classic - seated - like an alco on the hostel steps – but not one judge knocked him for it – although they slated a girl on one of the earlier shows for doing the same thing. Anyway, to stop himself from falling to sleep, Rob finally assumed a standing position. Marcia admired Rob’s cheekiness, Dicko called him a lazy bugger whilst Holds lowered the tone by enquiring about Millsy’s sleeping habits. Well after tonight – safe to say that Millsy will be back sleeping in his own bed at home in the very near future. 3.5/10
PAULINI
Boy did she look hot tonight – back to the straight hair and simply the girl smashed them. A fantastic, melodious and technically competent piece of brilliance. “Eternal Flame on Dicko’s Private Parts” – made it her own and was just in another class making the others look second raters. If the girl continues in this vein and the voters do the right thing then Paulini’s rivals can only hope for a consolation prize. 10/10
LAUREN
So how do you follow an an act like Paulini’s? Well contrast is one way and with Lauren we got a complete contrast all right with nothing more than a primary school standard attempt at “Lady Marmalade” – Lauren had a strange left eye twitch (the last time I saw such a thing – the bloke was asked to leave the bar). Looks like Cosima’s dance moves training has come to a crashing halt – the girl worked the stage with all the sleekness of a Heiffer in quicksand. It was a crap performance to be brutally honest. Dicko told her that it was a bad song choice while Marcia thought it was fine. So Marcia comes on at the start of the show and tells us that she learned from last week’s show that people made bad song choices – yet she’s let this one go through. Work that out. Worst performance of the night. 2.5/10
GUY
Fuzzy locks – the Cat Strangler in the Benny Hill wig. Who is this beanied man? Aaron Neville meets Stevie Wonder with The Chipmunks appointed as voice coach. Guy did the Robert Palmer tribute by donning the Calvin Lowe popstar suit. Now if anyone wanted a motive for suicide you couldn’t go too much better than being subjected to a Bryan Adams song. Guy wasn’t the worst but his performance given the pretentiousness of the song was an over-dramatic feline-asphyxiating mess of colostomy seepage. Marcia – geez I don’t know what they’re putting in her wheatgrass juice but she reckons Guy’s voice is the most beautiful instrument she’s ever heard. In that case a five year old’s gruggy fingernails down the blackboard must run a close second. Dicko got it right again criticising Guy’s overuse of vocal acrobatics. Nice suit. 4.5/10
KELLY
The second best performance of the evening – an excellent version of SilverCheeze’s “Tomorrow” – oozing confidence – very relaxed. Her professional experience showed and the judges approved. Very good. Hope those morons who nearly voted her out last week have had their mobile phones confiscated – they should be kept in a detention centre until the whole series is over. These people are dangerous. 7/10
SHANNON
The pride of Condoblin was up next with “What About Me” – another of those melodromatic non-songs - that sound heavy but fails to gel with the listener on an empathetic or in fact any emotional level. Shannon sang okay but it was Condoblin Diggers Karaoke semis in truth. The judges thought it good enought but their inconsistency (except for Dicko) is well documented. 4.5/10
REBEKAH
Rebekah always seems to start with the promise of something better with quite a pleasant tone but she has failed to deliver again just as Holds said. “Killing Me Softly” – started out fine but quickly disintegrated utlimately into an uneven and weak effort. The girl had a cold so that’s fair enough but I don’t think it would have ended up much different. Dicko was right in his criticism while Holds was disappointed but then again so are the two people who bought Hold’s albums in the seventies. 3.5/10
CLE
Pre-performance Cle commented that she felt last week’s decision to lose Matt was wrong as she had formed a special bond with him. Ho hom – let’s move on from that old news – nonsense – Matt was crap and had to go. Cle – get over it! Cle’s big number tonight “That’s the Way Love Goes” – commenced with all her usual self-confidence but I couldn ‘t help but think that I’m glad I wasn’t trapped in an elevator having to listen to this torture. It was like trying to mould a piece of shi*te out of clay and Cle went nowhere with it – she more or less breathed the vocal – without actually singing it. Dicko agreed bad song choice and Marcia went along with that train of thought. Capable of better and needs to lift next time. And I think Cle realises it. 3.5/10
LEVI
PLEASE PLEASE will someone from the Channel please either help Levi with his English expression else edit properly. He used “awesome” another three times tonight – be yourself Levi- and get a thesaurus mate for god's sake! Levi chose “Rock Your Body or Wrap Your body” or something like this – by the pop world’s answer to the sleeping tablet - minogue bum-fondling musical dog paddler, Justine Insomnilake. Levi was the clear third best performer of the night though and he did it well albeit the song was just another of those run of the mill starbuckified pieces from the music jukebox of the emotionally devoid. Well done though. 6/10
I'd say Lauren and Rebekah are in danger of going out after tonight. We'll see tomorrow.

COSIMA: Everyone knows that the girl has an awesome voice. However, I'm getting quite bored (and irritated) with her new 'image' - absolutely hated the hair extensions and the outfit - and the song just didn't do it for me; it didn't suit her voice as well as it could have. And was it just me or was Cosima's version a fair bit slower than the original? Either way, simply didn't love the performance and she could have done a lot better (please stop the hip wiggling, it's really old).
MILLSEY: What a charmer. He doesn't have the greatest voice in the world but he's going to go far in this competition riding solely on his charisma and cheeky grin. The song suited his voice and he's a good performer; however, I don't think it was the best that he could have done or can do.
PAULINI: Amazing. Cheesy song but it showed off her voice sooo well, and (sorry to be quoting Mark) she really made it her own and she hit those high notes like no one else in the competition would have been able to. Before tonight, I considered Cosima to be her fierce competition in terms of vocal ability, but now I'm convinced that Paulini is in a league of her own. Her voice is so pure and just absolutely stunning - and versatile, it suits all styles of music.
LAUREN: Much better than last week in terms of confidence on-stage; however, still didn't cut it. The song is hot and she's just not. The song is fun and she's just too intense - she simply doesn't have the attitude to pull it off. Also, she needs a stylist (what is with the hair, woman?) and she needs a choreographer - scratch that, she needs some rhythm, full stop. Vocally, she was decent but still a bit flat in some places and certainly nothing outstanding (especially when compared to the likes of Paulini). Goodbye, Lauren. You should've left last week.
KELLY: Typical, predictable Kelly performance. She's a good rock chick, her voice suits all the songs she chooses and she performed well, but whether or not it's good enough to get her through to the next round is a big question mark. Sadly, I doubt it.
GUY: Love him, love his voice, loved the song, loved the performance. He has a knack for making songs his own and he certainly did that tonight. However, I must kind of agree with Dicko in that the vocal gymnastics isn't always necessary nor suited to every song; Guy is great at all his frills and runs, but what I would love to see him do now is something nice and straight.
SHANNON: Fantastic. Brilliant choice of song and brilliant delivery. This guy has a really lovely voice and it couldn't have suited the song better. Before tonight, for me, Shannon was always good but not great. Tonight he was awesome, sent shivers up my spine, engaged me in his performance completely.
BEK: Oh, Bek. Two weeks in a row. Without a doubt, she is a one-trick pony. Enough of the sad r&b ballads, Bek, they don't work for you any more. They don't work in front of a live audience, and they definitely don't work when you have a sore throat. My soft spot for Bek remains; however, I'm honestly not going to be surprised if she'll be leaving us tomorrow night.
CLE: Bad choice of song - required the bare minimal in terms of vocal ability and just wasn't a good number to do in front of a live audience. The performance was competent - sexy without being cocky, therefore she didn't piss me off as much as she has in the past, but the choice of song will really let her down. If it weren't for her loyal fanbase, she would probably be in the bottom three.
LEVI: What a sexy, sexy dude. His voice wasn't up-to-scratch tonight (too much partying, apparently), but he didn't let that stop him - he worked the crowd with the best of what he had to offer and he did a great job in terms of performance (the boy can move and more importantly, the boy can move well!). Vocally, Justin Timberlake's range differs completely to his, therefore it probably wasn't the best song to do (note the especially low and high parts), but generally, well-executed. Won't be going home any time soon.
BOTTOM THREE: Lauren, Kelly and Bek. TO BE ELIMINATED: (hopefully) Lauren and Kelly; more realistically, probably Kelly and Bek.

Kayti,
With all due lack of respect, you've got some of it right but Kelly in bottom three you must be kidding! She was one of the few who seemed to know what they were doing. A controlled and relaxed performance. She nailed it. Lauren was atrocious and to rate Kelly down there with her is absurd. I have been to many karaokes Kayti and Shannon would be just another ok voice amongst the try hards. He wasn't fantastic - he was okay nothing more.

Pinkline,
If you read my comments for Kelly, you would have realised that I actually quite enjoyed her performance and thought that she did a good job - as usual.
My prediction for the bottom three isn't how I would have it, it's not my personal opinion on how the contestants did, it's how I think Australia is going to vote. Judging by Kelly's receiving the third lowest amount of votes last week, while her performance was solid, I don't think she did enough to 'wow' people this week in order for that result to change. With Matt and Peter now gone, I sadly think she's next in line.
My bottom three (in terms of personal opinion) would be Lauren, Bek and one of Cosima, Cle and Rob (none of their songs did anything for them).
Cheers.
Kayti.

I agree mostly with both of you - here's my opinion
COSIMA: Could have done better, she really needed to follow up last week's performace with something else, not the same old - but she still deserves another chance. 7/10
MILLSEY: Yes - What a charmer. I will scream if he wins because 5 million pubesent chicks sat on their (parent's funded) mobiles texting 'millsey is cute' - he's gotta go. He entertains OK, but sings Average. 5/10
PAULINI: Amazing. this girl must win. I like everything about her, and her voice is just top notch! 9/10
LAUREN: What's this rubbish about guy's think she's hot - she's not, and her eyes freak me out, and she didn't pull off that song one bit. BAD BAD BAD choice! Worst performance of the night - and I hope she goes. 3/10
KELLY: Kelly won't win this thing, but she's good, and she really needs to be fronting a band, and doing her own thing, so hopefully this show gives her that opportunity. She did well with an OK song... 7/10
GUY: Well personally I think Guy hit the note with this lady pleaser... I like his voice and I thought he sang it well. I disagree with dicko.. 8/10
SHANNON: Shannon did well I thought, but the song wasn't the best choice. He's hot, and he'll get through, but he won't win. 6/10
BEK: The sad depressing thing is wearing off. She has potential, but she's stuffed up two weeks in a row, and I don't know that the promise of something better is enought o get her thorugh. 4/10
CLE: Bad choice of song - she let herself down with this one!!! But she'll probably still make it thorugh. 4/10
LEVI: Frustratingly Levi did well tonight. I don't like him because of the fact he'll get votes regardless of what he sings. Why why why are stupid teen girls allowed to vote (hmm.. no doubt because they'll be the ones lining up to buy the CD) Anyway he's a good entertainer too.. 7/10
Overall I am hoping that Lauren goes, and I suspect she'll take Bek with her. (although I have no idea why Lauren wasn't in the bottom 3 last week, so I am worried that she has more support than she deserves)
Ah wel - we'll see tonight

Felicity,
People like Levi, Millsey, Bek, Lauren and Shannon all have firmly established fanbases who will no doubt continue to vote for them no matter how well or badly they may perform - especially Levi and Millsey, who have the majority of the teenage girl vote, and Lauren, who has the majority of the sympathy vote (blah blah blah, she's so young, blah blah blah, the poor thing is only 17, blah blah blah). Shannon has performed consistently, therefore he has nothing to be worried about; however, Bek's stuffed up two weeks in a row. Her fans were forgiving last week, hence her not being in the bottom three - I don't know how forgiving they'll be this time around. Tonight will tell.
Cheers.

Not many outstanding performances this week. The overall standard was poor...
COSIMA: Did a better job last week. There was hardly any contrast in her singing. 6.5/10
MILLSEY: This weeks performance lacked the enthusiasm and energy we saw last week. It was a bad song choice, he could have done better, but we'll see him through this week. 5/10
PAULINI: Most of you will disagree with me here, but Paulini's version of "eternal flame" was missing that x-factor. Last week she had been stunning, but this week was missing that overwheming feeling she tends to carry with her. I guess it's really because I know she can do better and she just chose a bad song to do...however, I do agree that her performance was one of the best last night. 8/10
LAUREN: We can all tell she was TRYing very hard to perform confidently last night but again she looked very awkward on stage. She looked so miserable up there, I really just wanted her to get off. 3/10
KELLY: On a performance level, she's okay...but in vocal and singing standards, she lacks that umph. Last night, she managed ruin a perfectly good Silverchair song. There was no dynamic and melodic variation, nothing special about her singing. She just didn't bring any justice to the song, I even had trouble recognising or enjoy it. 4.5/10
GUY: Guys performance was outstanding. He definitely has the best voice out of all the contestants and that was evident last night. I do to some extent agree with Dicko however, if he can learn to control was he does then he has a very high chance of being our idol. 8/10
SHANNON: I thought he was generally consistent last night, although his singing was tooo country influenced to my liking. 5.5/10
BEK: I was hoping she would chose a more upbeat song to perform, but she stuck to her typical slow R&B music. Her performance was very disapointing. Her voice is one that needs a lot of training and that is obvious from the past two weeks. Last nights performance really gave up any hope of her being the Australian idol 4/10
CLE: It was a bad song choice. I think one thing about Cle's unique husky voice is that it is generally hard to find a song suitable for it. I wonder what she'll sound like with a Macy Gray song? 4.5/10
LEVI: His singing wasn't up to scratch, he couldn't reach the high or the low notes...but apparently he had been out partying too much. On the performance level, he's a crowd pleaser so that will give him good marks. 6.5/10
People who may have to go: Lauren, Bek and Kelly

Just adding my two cents on last night - it was an average show with few performers choosing good songs that properly showcased their voices.
In my opinion, these Sunday nights are an absolute lottery. My theory is that to get through each week, each performer has to do enough to "excite their base" -in other words, mobilise the very people who voted them here in the first place. All the final 12 are obviously popular and have different bases of support. But if you throw in an absolute shocker - like Matt and the Pig Farmer did last week - even your most devoted fans will have trouble picking up the phone to vote for you.
Anyway, in chronological order:
COSSIMA: energetic performance and wonderful voice as usual, but looked atrocius. The novelty of her so-called "sexy" look is fast wearing off and her facial contortions bring back bad memories of Celine Dion. As everyone agrees, it was a bland song that didn't show off her voice and was too similar to last week. Going first also counts against her as she may get lost in the blur - still she should just scrape through. I don't think many guys find her sexy but enough girls will vote for her because she's accessible and not intimidating. I think there's also a bit of an ethno factor behind her - with a vocabulary that includes the word "hectic" she's a sort of woggy Delta Goodrem. 6.5/10
MILLSY: Despite his limited capabilities as a singer and a pretty dull song, I thought he was both charismatic and expressive on stage while mediocre in the vocal department. Being seated was an unusual, creative way to begin the song and showed good contrast from the previous week. No problem here exicting the female teenybopper fanbase. 6/10
PAULINI: I agree with whoever said that Paulini lacks x-factor. I think this has been the case with all her performances - she deserves to come close to winning but I just don't see her as a genuine superstar. The Bangles song has been done to death and the original version is by far the best. Paulini's version - while vocally competent was laboured and nothing special, and her voice doesn't "cut through" as a truly great singer's would. Also, is it just me, but as she grows more confident each week is she losing some of the innocence and vulnerability that drew viewers to her in the first place? 6.5/10
LAUREN: as Dicko rightly pointed out, terrible song choice that did no justice to her lovely pure voice. Made a better fist of the dancing than previous weeks and overall was more confident and less like a fish out of water. I find her sweet and endearing and think she's really got the potential to grow if she makes it to the final rounds. I also don't expect her to be in the bottom three - not with her classmates voting for her and her mum probably SMSing around the bloody clock. I also reckon there's are lots of young girls who identify with her as someone who goes to school and is nervous and insecure just like them. This may explain why she's staying in so far. 5/10
GUY: his best performance of the competition. Really let it rip, he was truly himself and tried as hard as he possibly could. I thought Dicko was a little harsh although I also find it hard to envisage Guy as the winner with his voice all over mainstream radio. Still, there's no denying he's musical, talented and a nice down-to-earth guy (no pun intended). Christian base ensures he's comfortably over the line for tonight. 8/10
KELLY: great look, solid performance, but chose a song with no mainstream appeal. Evanescence in the heat was a stroke of genius, this Silverchair number was too obscure for the young viewers watching and the performance probably not crowd-pleasing enough to excite people into voting for her. Her main drawback compared to the other contenders is that she is not particularly likeable. She obviously wants this badly and is quite talented but can come across as annoying. I expect her to be bottom three. 5/10
SHANNON: the performance of the night. Touching. tuneful song accompanied by piano suited his voice perfectly. He projects a mature and strong stage presence and comes across as someone who is fully at ease with who he is, even if he does lack a bit of personality and verve. He's typically very solid, dependable and hard to fault - equally at home with ballads or rocking it up - and should have country voters and slightly older women in his corner. In fact, if he keeps up this standard he's a chance to win. 9/10
BEK: is it just me or does she look like she's on the verge of suicide? Either that or it's some delayed form of post-natal depression. She certainly looked better yesterday - less of a bum hanging round Centrelink. But singing wise, she started promisingly only to completely lose the plot halfway through - melody disappearing without trace, running out of breath and voice getting lost in the band. Her sickly performance afterwards in front of the judges - "there's no one more disappointed in me than myself" was just embarrassing. Definite bottom three, but there's enough Bek supporters out there (probably with serious issues themselves) to ensure she finishes 3rd lowest. 4/10
CLE: an unmitigated disaster. If Bek was in the middle of post-natal depression, what the hell was the matter with Cle? She looked dazed, punch-drunk and off with the fairies. Probably the blandest song choice in the history of the competition, there was nothing redeeming in this performance and her interaction with the judges and hosts afterwards was woeful and depressing. She's a great girl with a lot of support, but I doubt that anyone with self-respect could pick up the phone and vote for her on that performance. 3/10
LEVI: as usual, never brilliant but very very solid. He's a good entertainer, and clearly enjoys himself on stage no matter what he's performing. Great smile and a good mover. Probably 3rd best on the night. 7.5/10
So, my tips are Cle and Kelly to go, Bek to scrape through for another week. Let's hope Kelly manages to make it through her farewell performance without dissolving in tears as she seemed likely to last Monday.

Alex,
I agree with most of your comments except for:
The Sunday nights won't be a lottery for Paulini - there will be a Royal Commission if she gets voted out and I'll be organising it!
I don't think calling Cosima a "woggy Delta Goodrem" is a particularly politically correct or in fact correct thing to write. And all Australians are ETHNICS unless you're trying to use it as a euphemism for an underlying wish to call someone "a wog". Well I certainly don't and I'd hope that most people would feel the same.
Alex, when it comes to Paulini - I didn't praise her because of her so-called innocence - I praised her because she's a terrific singer. She sang perfectly last night - just tell me exactly how she could have sung better. Just tell me how.
You find Lauren sweet and endearing - oh brother - that's almost bordering on certifiable stuff! She's about as sweet as endearing as a colonoscopy.
Shannon the performance of the night - ROLL ON FLOOR LAUGHING TRYING NOT TO LOSE THE KEBAB!! He is karaokesville!! You obviously haven't been to one or you'd realise what I'm talking about.

Cosima is going to go tonight because a) she did the same thing as last time b) she didn't do it well c) she's never really had a huge fan base d) she went first
Then it's a toss up between Kelly, Cle (please no), Guy and Lauren. It shouldn't be Kelly but I gurantee you she's in the bottom three

Pinkline...let go of the karaoke line....
Shannon has an awesome voice....downgrading him to a karaoke performer is crap! And before you say anything...i used to work part-time at a bar that had karaoke nights...and believe me, i've heard the best and the worst....and i still wouldn't put Shannon in a group with them!
I do agree with you about Paulini though...if she doesn't win, i will be quite surprised...she's been awesome in every performance!!!
