Guy reveals bid to curb abortion
Guy Sebastian has talked of plans to establish a support clinic for
women in an attempt to curb the abortion rate.
The 23 year old AI winner says he has no intentionof moralising to
women but believes a better support network to make informed
decisions is vital.
Along with one of his singers, Gary Pinto, previously of group CDB,
he wants to establish and help fund a centre which would inform women
of the consequences of abortion.
"I've met a few women who have had one and their stories are just
horrific, they just shock you," he said in Adelaide yesterday.
"Some have never recovered."
"It's the worst thing do, make an uninformed, uneducated decision,
that's how stuff goes wrong."
While the idea and the location are in the formative stages,
Sebastian said the centre would cater for both women considering and
those who hav had abortions .
It could involve a hotline, information, counselling, accommodation
and rehabilitation, testimonials from others who hav terminated their
pregnancies and a refferal service.
"I'm anti-abortion; i don't believe an human being has the right to
decide the fate of another but i'm totally against teling other
people what to do," Sebastian said.
The ARIA award winner, who has strong Christian faith, returned to
his home town yesterday for Mother's DAy.
He is alos going to sing at today's AI auditions at the Hotle
Adelaide International, ahead of his national tour.
Sebastian said he was on track to realise two more dreams this year -
recording a gospel album in the US and joining World Vision in a trip
to impoversihed communities in Afruca.
"It's a massive dream (going to Africa); if i can do anything at all
to use my position to raise awareness it will be the most gratifying
feeling," he said.
On his rise to stardom since first auditioning for Idol two years
ago, Sebastian said the transition from singing teacher to chart-
topper had not changed him. "i haven't had a deep personal change;
i'm a stronger person," he said.
"I've realy learned to love people alot more, which probably sounds
strange , but through that experience having everyone believe in me.
"being on tour and seeing people sing your words, it's the best
feeling."
He was always surprised when people "congratulated" him for not being
seduced by fame's seedier side, such as drugs and drinking.
"i think it's stupid that people congratulate me for that. i don't
care about impressing people," he said. it was not long ago he was
cleaning toilets at a nursing home.
Now living in a $1 million plus home in Sydney's exclusive Palm
Beach - around the corner from tennis star Lleyton Hewitt and fiancee
Bec Cartwright's home - and working with some of his musical heroes,
Sebasian said he sometimes had to pinch himself.
But despite feeling "blessed" by his opportunities, he still yearned
for home, family and girlfriend Julie Egan in Adelaide. "I miss it so
much, " he said/
"I don't really kno anyone in Sydney, only a handful, but people back
home know you for the dag you are.
"Back home you never worry about image, trying to be cool, but over
here you kind of find yourself thining stuff like that."
