Hi everyone! I just came back from Darwin today after auditioning on Thursday and let me say... what an experience.
Thursday, May 20
My Dad and I got to Mararra oval at about 5am to line up. We thought there would be heaps of people, like the other states. Huh so much for that , there were about 20 people there until 7.30, when the rest of the town showed up (a grand total of about 300 ;D) It was great! lol.
Anyway they got us into lines at about 8am and took footage and all that stuff. James and Andrew G rocked up and me and my friend Kaylene got an interview with them (yay we were the only Alice Springs peoples there!). After that they took us inside where we got our blue number band tied around our wrist (I felt like I had just escaped from the hospital hehe). It was all go after that.
I went into the first audition room and sung 'show me heaven' by Maria Mckee. The judges were two women and they were pretyt scary, I tell ya! The whole time I sang, there wasn't the tiniest hint of expression on either of their faces. Once I had finished, still no smiles or nothing, but they said "You have quite a good voice. We are going to let you through to the next audition. And so they gave me my blue card... I was through!
Next it was photo time and then we had to fill out a profile. Tricky questions . We waited in line for 'the pink room' (we nicknamed it that, knowing it was the room where you get your pink card if you get through). I met some great people in line, I happened to be sitting next to a girl who got all the way to Sydney.
Anyway it was really nerve racking, but when I got in there, Greg (I think he must be exec. producer?) shook my hand and after I sung he handed me a pink card and said he would love for me to come back the next day. I was thrilled!
Friday, May 21
So the next day was at a restaurant-type setting. 54 people made it though to this second stage, which Dicko said was a lot. Yeah, he came out and talked to us all briefly before the auditions started. Tried to wind us up a bit. haha, it worked! It was a full day's waiting here. I was number 39 to audition (they didn't put you in any particualr order, which I thought was crap cos I was one of the fisrt people to turn up on day one!), and the suditions lasted until 6pm.
It was a long day! It was a great atmosphere though. By lunch time, 3 people had been accepepted for Sydney and so everyone was really excited. The nerves dissapeared for most of us because we were so bored lol... some of us went down to the beach to warm up our vocal chords. Some poor girl went to a corner with her headet on to warm up and the cameras (we called them AIP (Apes!) or Aus Idol Paparazzi) crept up on her and filmed her! You should have seen her jump when she turned around and saw them there hehe
The Big One!
When it finally came to my turn, I felt calm and cool. But nothing could have prepared me for that room. Walking in and seeing the judges for the first time, while being surrounded by cameras and security, was the most intimidating thing I have ever been through. I said nervous but cheery 'hello' and all three said the same back. Dicko and Marcia asked how I was, I told them I was great and asked how they were. A bit of chit-chat followed, and I sung my song. I was so nervous that I was shaking, and it effected my singing a lot. I didn't do half as well as I could have, but I honestly thought that they would understand that. Dicko spoke first...
"You're too mature for your age. I think you should try to be a teenager" is what he said (I'm 16). I argued back a bit, but I let him keep his say in case the other two liked me. Marcia said straightaway that she disagreed with Dicko, and that I did a great job. Mark was the harshest. I found from my audition and from others, that he was the main insult giver. Dicko more just spoke his mind, this guy was the one who threw the insults for no good reason. (we nicknamed him the 'Controversy man'!) He told me "You have a good voice, but it isn't up to our standards."
Afterwards...
I thanked them and left. When I opened the door, there were the cameras! I told them what happened and they asked me some questions. I obliged and answered politely, but after a minute I felt I was breaking apart and raced over to my Dad for a hug. Then I started crying! I don't do that often and I didn't want to, but I was just overwhelemed by everything. I turned around to sit down and the film crew were so into my personal space that it made me cry even more! They asked me to call my mum and tell her the bad news. I felt like telling them to f*** off. All I wanted was to have a bit of a sook and they wouldn't leave me alone... I felt it was verry disrespectful. Now I know how celebrities feel lol.
James came over after that and talked for a bit. He was really sympathetic and just so sweet. I gave him a hug and he goes "don't worry about it babe. Just come back next year ok!" I asked him if I could meet Marcia after, and he said "sure you can!" He got me into the audition room at 6.30 when everyone was finished, and Marcia was in there waiting to say hi. We had a laugh about it and she said 'don't worry about those two (Mark & Dicko) Some of the things they say.... aaargh! (she did a little punching action hehe). She was really, really great and so genuine. Everything that came out of her mouth was the truth and I respect her so much for being honest in a nice way. She told me I could do with some training and said to come back next year when I'm a bit older. I told her I will!
So that was my audition experience. Not as great as the 6 people who got through, but not as bad as some of the 38 who didn't either! I admit that I was one of the lucky ones. Some people got really nasty comments from the judges, and one girl came out so angry that she swore like crazy and pushed the cameras (and poor James!) out of the way. It was scary stuff, but I felt for her.
WHAT I LEARNT
(1) Don't take Australian Idol too seriously. If you don't make it in, it's not the end of the world. And if your'e determined, you can come back next year!
(2) Dicko and Mark are arrogant and have their heads stuck in their bums. Enough said.
(3) There is, apparently, such thing as being 'too mature for your age'. Hmm. Let me dwell on that one for a bit.
(4) Paparazzi are scary (and very nosy!)
(5) Don't let nerves spoil your audition. It's your one chance to shine in front of the judges.
(6) Marcia is pumped!
I will post some pictures once I get them developed ok!
Sorry this was so long... hey, this was the EDITED version!! ;D
