Here, here Perfect Pitch!! I agree with you about Aunty Re Re (Arethat Franklin)!! She would be just floored by Guy's voice and vocal capacity. I LOVE R an B!! Love the way the singers have the ability to "play" with notes and scales. Guy does this so well. Has been a long time since I've heard a voice like his!!
Takes awhile for people who are used to listening to a single genre of music to appreciate his (and other R and B singers) talent and ability. Which is funny since R and B is based on Gospel (think a very young Aretha), Blues (think a verry young Jimi Hendrix), and Rock (think a very young Etta James)!! Lotsa genres included in R and B. It is an interpretive style of music though...I think this throws people!!
Guy's style goes to your SOUL. And that's what R and B used to be called here in the USA...Soul Music!!
GUY #1 SOULMAN!!

Magilla, His flaws? We just happened to be honoured that Guy had the pluck to audition for this show. There are HUNDREDS of children/teens/ people in their young 20s across Australian raised in churches that play all varieties of music in praise and worship..... A LOT. A lot of them have a particularly gifted talent through years of practice. (Having the gifted voice helps too). but I've heard people who can't hold a tune, raised in a non musical environment, start going to this churches, get involved in praise and worship regularly - within 2 years, they are singing perfectly in tune - I'm not kidding. Guy had the guts to 'go for the show' - so the rest of the country to get a peek at some church talent. Thanks Guy.

To Perfect Pitch 2 - if you heard some of the wierd chord structures/arrangement I play on piano (and love) - you wouldn't have to ask that question.

Perfect Pitch,
Well without wanting to call myself the best thing since Millsy - I have the PP - some do some don't but there were no big issues with pitch problems on this world idol farce.
Think the trouble is that many people want to tell you that someone was slightly off key to make themselves look important somehow. On occasions I'd imagine every singer had a minor slipup whilst crafting a vocal - but that's irrelevant - the great Steffi Graf didn't always hit her famous forehand perfectly but still got the job done - same thing here.
The issue with this show was that the standard was very poor and that the best singer in the Idol comps was absent. Its also amusing when people want to fuss over and search for a pitch problem - yet as regards to passion - one of the essential ingredients in good singing - those same people wouldn't have a clue.

To Pinkline Jones - You can not have read my opinions on each singer - I was fair, criticism is not where I'm coming from, I just happen to have been very involved in music and singng - and appreciate any singer's potential. You have taken the whole post by its heading - there's more to this whole thread than that, and thankfully, others have seen that. Perhaps you should read it all again.

To anuverwillfan, thanks for the links to more of Will’s songs – no doubt this young man has an amazing voice, in fact, it wouldn’t have surprised me if he had won WI. I think we can safely say that about a number of the singers.
Can I also say more definitively, as some have not picked up how I feel, each singer should be proud that they represented their country.
The one good thing it has done has sent people scrambling to hear more of their voices, buy their CDs.
World Idol the Show?, while you may or may not agree with a lot about it, it gave good exposure to some new young people.
Anyone who taped WI is going to either appreciate each voice more, or want to listen to more of their singing. Yes it did cause controversy (which may have been very deliberate – he he, as in, ‘let’s see what we can do to stir up every country’, get their attention. …… They did.)
Will YOU watch WI next year? I’m sure most who have already seen it will, whether you like the way it’s presented/cut/pre-recorded/shown differently in country etc. or not.

I’m sure most who have already seen it will, whether you like the way it’s presented/cut/pre-recorded/shown differently in country etc. or not. DId you listen to them then Perfect Pitch? Will's main idol (hence the PI song) was Aretha Franklin and that's who he'd most like to duet with .. we live in hope! His new album ('Friday's Child') is even better... but I'm not gonna post links to that!!! But hope you might consider buying/listening if and when it's released over there! I would like to hear some of the competitors singing something else, 'cos it's difficult to really judge anybody fairly from one performance, and agree that the comp. has at least given us a taster and the singers some world exposure. As to whether I'd watch it next time .... probably not. I must admit I only watched it this time 'cos Will was on it! The problem is that here in the UK, we've just finished the second series of PI and have had numerous 'other' reality shows going on for ages and it's all got a bit boring really. I don't mean that it doesn't find talent, but that the programs now seem to be missing the spark that made them popular ... individuality - they now just appear formulaic. This is why, I think , the show didn't receive much attention from the press in the UK ... in fact, it hardly made a ripple. This report was published today in The Daily Telegraph (a respected National, and broadsheet, newspaper) re. music of 2003: Click here- not much but it does, at least, acknowledge the competition happened.

Perfect Pitch,
I certainly did read your post and this is what you claimed re: out of key performers.
"My observationis this - 5 out of the 11 singers in the World Idol competition notably sang out of key. Which 5 were they? I think you may be surprised at who DIDN'T sing out of key, more than you will be surprised by who did sing out of key. "
Now - as the world's most foremost music critic and singers I can suggest to you that your statement is out of order. Buy yourself a tuning fork - I doubt your qualifications.
