You may or may not know me, but playing musical instruments, singing, arranging voices to harmonise is what I've done for years. Singing in tune is the most basic thing I look for to start in judging a person's voice, and the way a song is sung.
My observationis this - 5 out of the 11 singers in the World Idol competition notably sang out of key. Which 5 were they? I think you may be surprised at who DIDN'T sing out of key, more than you will be surprised by who did sing out of key.

I would love some professionals in the industry out there - who do 'know their stuff' join in on this one - sure to start differences of opinion. You see, if you can't sing in tune yourself, you often can't tell if someone else is or isn't. No,not always the case, but often.

Seeing as you said I'd be surprised, I will say the 5 who sang out of key were - Guy (why else would you post this subject here?) - Kurt (that would be surprising) - Kelly - Heinz - Alex So how did I go? BTW, If I wanted perfect pitch, I'd go to the opera and turn off the radio

Jamai, Alexander and Alex had some really Stogey notes. Kelly had one (on that You make me feel so alive bit).
If I were to guess one of the people you think sang off key I would say Ryan.

What makes you think I'm here to pick on Guy?
Guy's pitch in every way was perfect. How else would they be able to make a CD in 5 and a half days, if his voice wasn't so easy to work with. A lot of his songs for the CD were done in very few takes - the arrangements took the time - he had plenty of time to sit around,
Did you think you had an anti Guy poster here? I've yet to hear Guy sing out of tune.

Larry the one I disagree with you on is Jamai - I couldn't fault his performance for pitch, showed off quite a bit really, what he could do with his voice in that short amount of time.

What makes you think I'm here to pick on Guy? Sorry for my assumption . I've seen too many people claiming to be opera/classical singers who diss Guy on pitch. I assumed your post was in the same vein. My genuine picks would've been - Alex (definitely) - Kelly - Ryan - Heinz - ?? Can't remember anyone else.

I've yet to hear Guy sing out of tune. I hate to say it but Guy had a really obvious off-key note when he sang Climb Every Mountain [glow=yellow,2,300];D ;D MSP ;D ;D[/glow]

Larry, I missed that note you are talking about with Kelly - I'll have to listen again, I do have to admit I switched off a little bit, because she seemed exhausted, tired, from the start of the song and has obviously sung better than she did on the night.
I didn't pick her as singing out of key. I'm not trying to be pickey, I just think singing in tune is important - if going out of key is based on nerves you can pick it too, and think it should be allowed for.

mangosquarepantz, when I heard Guy sing, "Climbe Every Mountain", he 'held back a little' on one note, (almost like he had a case of nerves, or had 'run out of wind') but he was still singing perfectly in tune to me in the version I heard. he just sang it softer than he probably originally intended for some reason.

That note in CEM on the word rainbow was not out of tune at all, it was quite deliberate, if that's the one you are thinking of. I've listened to it on the DVD of Greatest Momrnts several times and it sound perfectly OK, my hubby has a particularly good "ear". I am interested in the 5 tho.

Hi Guys,
just wanted to join in on the pitch conversation.
We are no experts but my husband does have a lot of singing experience and general music training and so do i
We have listened to Guys CEM mountain heaps and heaps of times ( what can I say it makes us feel good).
I can see why it may seem like that note on rainbow was off but I really think that it is fine. It appears to be a delibrate kind of half note which he has held back on a bit quite probably on purpose.
Just my opinion anyway Keep in mind too that the performance were not really designed to be re listened to but rather create an impression on the night and hey on that night we were really impressed!!!!
Would be interested to know who the 5 were. I noticed Alex and Alexander
take care all
