Okay, first of all, let me say I think Simon and Dicko are probably the two best Idol judges in the world from what I've seen.
Some of the other judges on World Idol seemed to have no clue at all (though I did like the English judge..don't know his name but his comments were pretty good)
The Australian and American judges bare some striking similarities in the way they judge.
Paula Abdul and Marcia Hines are both extremely hesitant to dish out criticism as the show goes on. They can do it okay through the auditions and probably up until the final 12 stage. From then, there comments can become too gushing for my liking.
Sometimes it seems like they try and make up something positive about the performance to counteract the negative they have to say cos the performance was terrible.
Although, Marcia is far worse than Paula in this regard, which is why I prefer Paula as a judge.
I can distinctly remember a number of occassions (and the videos on the Oz Idol site will back me up here) where someone will do a performance which she will criticise (saying they had pitch problems, etc) but then say they did a great job. What's with that??
Mark Holden's commentary is just plain ridiculous. He is utterly clueless and spoils the show somewhat with the most ridiculous phrases and comments (which BTW aren't even funny - I personally find some of Dicko's comments much more incisive and witty). I hope they replace Mark this season.
Randy Jackson in the American version isn't much better, although generally his criticism is more well thought out.
I think Dicko and Simon are about on par in terms of their honesty and critique ability, but I do feel Simon's ego is far far bigger than Dicko's and can get very self righteous at times.
So, my ratings are these:
1. Ian Dickson
2. Simon Cowell
3. Paula Abdul
4. Randy Jackson
5. Marcia Hines
6. Mark Holden
