Aussies shine at music awards By Jonathan Moran and Amy Fallon March 04, 2005 From: AAP AUSTRALIANS picked up six out of the 12 gongs at the inaugural MTV Music Awards in Sydney last night. Delta Goodrem was voted best female artist while Shannon Noll took out the best male category at the MTV Australia Video Awards (AVMAs) at Sydney's Luna Park. A host of big-name international acts were on hand at the event including former Playboy playmate Anna-Nicole Smith, ex-Baywatch babe Carmen Electra and the Osbournes. Goodrem arrived in the country from the UK this week and said she had not had time to think about winning an award. "I haven't even thought about it," said the singer, accompanied by boyfriend Brian McFadden. "I'm a bit jet-lagged still." Goodrem and McFadden sang a duet, Almost Here. "It's a break-up song so it's not exactly romantic to sing to somebody but it's a song that I absolutely love and I'm proud to have on my album so it's great to sing," Goodrem said. Noll, who last night sang a duet with Canadian Bryan Adams, said it was a great feeling just to be involved. "This is all to do with the people so that's what I'm stoked about the most," he said. Noll was up against British singer Robbie Williams and Americans Usher and Eminem for the best male category. "It's a bit of competition there but it's a great feeling," Noll said. Missy Higgins was voted Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Delta Goodrem also took out the Pepsi Viewers Choice Award. For the music videos, Guy Sebastian won best pop video for Out With My Baby, and the Dissociatives won Video of the Year for Somewhere Down the Barrel. "You don't really come to these nights to get an award," Sebastian said. "I think it's about getting frocked up and it's about celebrating music." US group Green Day were at the event to receive the Best Rock Video award for American Idiot. The inaugural AVMAs are aimed at acknowledging the best in Australian and international music in 12 viewer-voted categories. Nominated locals included Jet, Spiderbait, Grinspoon, Pete Murray, Kylie Minogue and Powderfinger. Winners were determined by viewer interaction by SMS, email, fax and telephone. The Osbourne family – Ozzy, Sharon and kids Kelly and Jack – hosted the awards with performances from Simple Plan, Grinspoon, Green Day and Kelly Osbourne. Natalie Imbruglia performed the first single from her latest album, Shiver, while Goodrem sang a duet with McFadden. Presenters included Anna-Nicole Smith, Dannii Minogue, Keith Urban, Kelly Slater, Nitty and Kim Freedman. Ex-Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett, now a Labor MP, also presented an award. The awards were broadcast live on the MTV pay channel and will be rebroadcast on Channel 10 tonight. They will be shown on MTV's 32 different networks around the world, giving the ceremony a potential audience of one billion people. www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,12437055-26618,00.html

Pop goes MTV as the Idol generation votes By Harriet Alexander March 4, 2005 Delta Goodrem and her boyfriend Brian McFadden. Photo: AP What do you get when you cross a much-hyped music event with an SMS and online voting poll? Guy, Shannon and pop. The Idol generation reaffirmed its passion for the stars it created at the MTV music video awards last night. Beneath the leer of the Luna Park grin but not the dignity of the hosting Osbourne family, celebrities in grades A to C came together for the inaugural event. Artists Carmen Electra, Keith Urban, Shannon Noll, Bryan Adams, Dannii Minogue, Figgkidd, actor Daniel MacPherson and surfer Kelly Slater presented awards and Natalie Imbruglia performed from her latest album Shiver. The 2003 Australian Idol runner-up, Shannon Noll, can now discard his second-best track record and stop singing What About Me after winning best male artist. His one-time victor Guy Sebastian won best pop video with Out with My Baby. Multiple ARIA winner Delta Goodrem maintained her status as Australia's darling, with best female artist and Pepsi Viewers' Choice. Missy Higgins won the prize for breakthrough artist. All winners were voted by viewers using SMS or online from an MTV list of nominees, except for the Pepsi and Super Nova (as in the radio station) awards, which were open to anybody. The Super Nova award went to New Zealand-born, Sydney-based band Evermore. Cher, who was meanwhile singing at her farewell concert at the Entertainment Centre, won the VH1 Music First Award for lifetime achievement. But it was not just about the music, and there was a place for pure superficiality. Gwen Stefani's What Are You Waiting For won best dressed video, and the Black Eyed Peas' Hey Mama won sexiest video. High Notes Best male artist: Shannon Noll Best female artist: Delta Goodrem Breakthrough artist: Missy Higgins Best group: Green Day www.smh.com.au/news/Music/Pop-goes-MTV-as-the-Idol-generation-votes/2005/03/03/1109700610477.html

Stars sparkle By Natacha Butler and Toby Forage March 04, 2005 From: NEWS.com.au Having fun ... Anna Nicole, Sharon Osbourne, Carmen Electra and Kelly Osbourne / Adam Ward SOME of the biggest stars in showbiz have braved the rain in Sydney for the inaugural Australia MTV Music Video awards at Luna Park. Central Coast beauty Natalie Imbruglia joked to NEWS.com.au that she may have been responsible for the wild storm that circled the harbour, having jetted in from her adopted country, England. "I know it's terrible, isn't it?" she said. "I must have brought it with me." But one American bombshell didn't mind the rain one bit. "I just love the rain," gushed former Playboy playmate Anna-Nicole Smith. Dressed in a slinky hot-pink gown, the wealthy widow turned reality TV star dazzled fans on the red carpet and even turned the heads of fellow celebrities. Home and Away star turned chart-topping cutie Tammin Sursok was in no doubt about whom she had come to see. "I can't wait to see Anna-Nicole Smith, actually," said Tammin, who looked stunning in a red Nicola Finetti mini dress with feather trim. "You know you see them on TV, but it's fun to see them in real life." Former Baywatch babe Carmen Electra, who hosted the red carpet for the iconic music channel with rapper Xzibit, was a fashion standout in a fitting jade Robert Cavalli gown. The curvaceous beauty, who told reporters yesterday she was a AC/DC fan, said she was also excited about seeing one of Australia's newest stars. "I'm looking forward to seeing Missy Higgins," she said. "I've heard so much about her and her record is coming out in the States soon, and I can't wait to get my hands on it." When it came to who the fans wanted to get to grips with, the biggest cheers were again reserved for the Australian Idol stars - winners Guy Sebastian and Casey Donovan as well as lucky losers Shannon Noll, Millsy, Paulini and Anthony Calllea. While the nation's favourite fro-bro opted for black and white '50s vintage cool, he still found room for a little bling in the shape of a diamond crucifix bracelet. It was an understated fashion statement that may be catching, as US rappers du jour Chingy and Ja Rule kept it real in basic outfits with only a glimpse of glitter. entertainment.news.com.au/story/0,10221,12426482-7484,00.html

Bombshells raise roof By Natacha Butler and Toby Forage March 04, 2005 From: AAP Former Playmate Anna Nicole sexed up proceedings by undoing her dress on stage to reveal her generous chest emblazoned with two MTV logos. The Texan model turned reality TV star was supposed to present Dissociatives singer Daniel Johns with an award but instead jumped on him, and locked the surprised star in a steamy hug. Asked later how he felt to be tackled by the buxom blonde Daniel gallantly declined to comment. Carmen told NEWS.com.au on the red carpet she was looking forward to the saucy performance. "I'm not nervous at all, it'll be fun," she said.
