Idol star took pot for pain By Darren Devlyn July 03, 2004 AUSTRALIAN Idol runner-up Shannon Noll has revealed that he turned to marijuana to cope with the death of his father. Noll said he used the drug to numb the pain of his dad's death three years ago. But it was his concern for the relationship with his child that drove him to leave the drug behind. Noll makes the personal revelations in a new TV documentary called Up Close, filmed this week. He talks frankly about the day of his father's death on their New South Wales farm, in Condobolin. "I had a flat tyre on the farm. I went to a service station to get it fixed and that five or 10 minutes made me too late to help dad. "I drove through the farm gate and two tanks were lying down, and dad was lying near them. In my heart of hearts I knew the reaper was coming to my family that day and dad put his hand up. That was the man he was, he said." Noll also revealed the financial struggle that followed. "Dad was pronounced dead at 9am and by 1pm the bank said it had frozen every account with his name on it." The documentary will be screened on Channel 10 at the end of July. Asked by host Ian Dixon about the rumour he was a regular at a brothel, Noll laughed and said: "I don't think I'd have to pay for it. "I'm not being arrogant. I had a crack when I was a kid – it was a life experience and you can't die wondering about that stuff," he said. I think Shannon revealing his past is a good thing. As a fan, I don't like to hear negative stories but him airing his own dirty laundry now is better than some smug tabloid newspapers printing it down the road and making money from it.
He probably smoked it without thinking that he was going to be a star one day and very likely regret what he did. And losing his father, someone very close to him that way and putting all sorts of pressure on the family, well they are very strong reasons why he resorted to it. Not that it should be condoned in any way.
He also might or might have not done alot of other things but I am sure we ALL have done some things in our lives at one point or another that we regret.
It's actually quite couragous of him to tell all and face the backlash... and some fans might even admire him for it because it makes him a more genuine human being.
I really like to see the show before making any more judgements.

Good on you Shan His Dad would be proud of him to see how hard he has worked to provide for his family and give other family members opportunities to be successful also. I guess, I was concerned about the brothel comment – it just came across in the news article that it is something that all young men do – I have young sons – I want them to be in loving relationships to have this life experience. Sorry... must be the romantic in me – I have gone all Mills and Boon this afternoon

Yep. For sure this is partly about publicity for Shannon.
Yep. For sure it is good for him to have told as opposed to tabloids. (I hope that he told all though cus once you "open up the door" to the press....all bets are off!)
Lastly, ANYBODY life put under a microscope will come out looking shabby. We are humans and make mistakes and do things that we "aren't supposed to do". He's not perfect. Good for him to tell now AND get some publicity out of it as well. (The press were probably gonna tell some details and he got a heads up about it. Decided to beat them to the punch! Good for him!!!!!)

Both grief and youth can be irrational. Shannon coped probably the only way he knew how in a desparatley sad time of his life. Still deceiding though whether it was wise to share it all. I guess people will like it or dislike it but for Shannon I think that he tells it just the way it is for him. Jo

It's actually quite couragous of him to tell all and face the backlash... and some fans might even admire him for it because it makes him a more genuine human being. I really like to see the show before making any more judgements. I totally agree. Like A fan said I don't condone what he did in the past in any way, but it took a lot of guts for Shannon to reveal this to the media knowing it could harm his career. I actually feel more proud of him for admitting this, because he didn't have to but still chose to admit it to the public. Why because he believes it being honest, and that's one of the things I most admire about Guy and Shannon their honesty. He made a few mistakes in life, and that just proves that he's human. If everyone was perfect the world would be a boring place, and chocolate wouldn't exist and we could never say anything about Guy's stripy pants ;D ;D. I love Shannon because I'm biased (he's a Virgo like me), and because he is a beautiful person, who's extremely talented with a good heart and to me that makes up for anything he may of done in the past. He had lost someone in his life that was the centre of his world, his rock on earth. And if I lost my mum (she's my rock) (or Guy Sebastian lost someone like his mum) I/he would be just as irrational. When someone like that leaves your world (even though they may be with God) it's like your world has crumbled and the pain you feel is overwhelming especially when you blame yourself (like Shannon did). Maybe I'm rambling and I don't make sense, my opinion of Shannon has not changed it is something he regrets in his life and has moved on from that. I really admire Shannon for telling people this and it just shows us how genuine he really is. He is still a kind person who appreciates his fans and believes in being honest, well done Shannon it took a lot of courage, and we are with you all the way. Though Guy is still my favourite, I can't help it, it's those Stripy pants ) And Hairbear love your new Signature

I am not bothered by the 'brothel' comment ....but more concerned with the 'drugs' issue. Being a parent, it is just NOT COOl to turn to drugs to solve any problems. I hope he will come out and emphasize that because he is a good example of a user who turned away from it and made good eventually.
I went on shannon's yahoo site and members who went to the taping said .. in short.. you have to see and hear the full story and it was laughter one minute and tears the next. Sounded like it was all very emotional and they were moved.
I can't wait to see it.

I agree it is not COOL to use drugs, to solve your problems. And I believe that Shannon will emphasis this in the program. I truly believe that Shannon regrets what he did, and I'm not going to judge him because I have been lucky enough in my life not to lose someone that was my rock (like Shannon's dad was to him).

Over the years I have found that people that have dabbled in drugs and walked away, lead a much more productive and happy life than those people that have never delved into drugs at all. Wonder why?
