Big crowds tipped for Noll's gig today
By SIMON TENNANT , Sunday, 4 July 2004
Countrywide appeal: Shannon Noll.
AFTER three sell-out shows at Hobart's Derwent Entertainment Centre last month, Australian Idol sensation Shannon Noll will be in Launceston today to perform and meet his growing legion of Northern fans.
Thousands of people are expected to descend on the Albert Hall from 10am today to see Noll perform and sign copies of his latest single Learn To Fly and his five-time platinum album That's What I'm Talking About.
Noll rose to fame after finishing second to Guy Sebastian in the inaugural series of the reality television show Australian Idol late last year.
Noll's debut single, What About Me, a cover of Australian 1980's band Moving Pictures, was a number-one smash hit for the former NSW country boy, which was followed by Drive (written by Canadian rocker Bryan Adams), which also went to number one on the Australian Aria charts.
Earlier this week, Noll said he still found it remarkable the amount of hype and publicity he has received since his
television performances, and said he was thrilled to be returning to Tasmania.
"It's all just unbelievable," he said. "We had such a great time last time. I think Tassie people relate more to me than people in larger cities."
The Examiner's music publication X-Static, which appeared in Friday's paper, offered two of its readers (plus a friend) the chance for a personal meet-and- greet with Noll after today's performance.
The response was incredible, with more than 1450 SMS entries received by the 5pm deadline.
The two lucky readers are: Emma Faulkner, of St Marys, and Annette Hibbs, of Launceston.
Fans who want to say hello to Noll and grab his autograph must have their own copy of his new single, Learn To Fly, or his album That's What I'm Talking About, to be able to join the queue.
