GUY SEBASTIAN IS UNDOUBTEDLY AUSTRALIA'S HOTTEST ACT RIGHT NOW. I CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO CHAT ABOUT HOW MUCH HIS LIFE HAS CHANGED SINCE BECOMING A HUGE STAR. BELIEVE IT OR NOT GUY WASN'T ALWAYS A NATURAL ON STAGE. GET A LOAD OF THIS.
"The first time I'd actually sung in public was at a wedding when I was 11, it was my cousin's wedding and, and I was woeful. I, I just, I was so nervous that I, I kinda couldn't look at anyone and nothing came out, the music started playing, it was Bryan Adam's 'Everything I Do I Do It For You', and it's just like (whispers words) and just nothing came out (laughing), so it was really embarrassing and people said, you know, don't give up your day job, you shouldn't be a singer and blah blah blah , but I thought I'd give it another bash and it took a few years, about 3 years, and I was again ultra nervous, I was trembling and just looking at the ground the whole time, and at the end of the song I kinda looked up and a whole heap of people were crying so it was, it was kinda the first time I'd realized how you can, you know, emotionally connect with music."
NOW OF COURSE HE IS ADORED BY MILLIONS. HOW DOES HE HANDLE THE FAME?
"I never thought that I would get a fan base. I remember, um, sitting in, in my room one day and I was on the internet, on Google, and I thought, I think I typed in my favourite idol's name and thought, imagine typing in your name and finding all these web sites about you and its, its kinda like I did that and there's all these fan sites and stuff and I have just had amazing support from everybody, they have just been so incredibly supportive and so
*Angels Brought Me Here starts to play*
positive and, and so uplifting to me and, and um, it's, it really does egg you on and spur you on to keep going". (Snippet of Angels clip.)
THINK GUY WAS AN ALL ROUND NICE GUY? (EVIL LAUGH) THINK AGAIN !
"When I was young I kinda had the golf club and the golf ball in the back yard, (as you don't do because it's a little bit dangerous, don't try that at home), and ah I was whacking a ball around and, and ah the ball accidently went through the window, and I kinda went up to my little brother and placed the golf club in his hand and blamed him (cute face) so I don't think many people know about that (laughing), certainly not my little brother so I'm very sorry ……"
THERE IS NO MISTAKING THAT HAIRDO. BUT HOW DOES GUY GO OUT IN PUBLIC THESE DAYS?
"I don't really get that much time to go out heaps but, um, but when I do it's, it is a bit of an effort (laughing) , but it's cool, I meet so many great people and um, you make so many peoples' days - you know, it's a great power to have, you can just walk past a family and, and they sorta get excited to see you and you sign something and they are just laughing and smiling for a while, so it's really cool." (Snippet of AINIY clip).
SO JUST HOW HAS GUY'S LIFE CHANGED AND WHAT ADVICE DOES HE HAVE FOR ASPIRING SINGERS?
"We sometimes forget the really important things in life and, and kinda like, I went from um, you know, you got your family around me, I had my friends around me, suddenly I'm into this fame thing, it's like now I'm kinda going, oh I miss my family, I miss my friends, so I think the biggest advice I could say to anyone is don't ever take advantage of what you already have and, and don't ever take, you know, for granted your friends and your family, and the people who really you know, really care about you, and stuff, it's far more important than fame or, or celebrity or money ever will be."
