Idol's life far from idle! – "stuff" magazine, herald sun
Tell us about your new single
It's called all I need is you and I'm really pleased with it.
It's a simple love song about a girl I used to date and it just pooped into my head. I just started singing it in the shower one day and I ran to my mobile phone and recorded it on my message bank before I forgot it.
You do more than sing, don't you?
Songwriting is a huge thing for me. I love writing, I love
playing the piano even thought I'm not an incredible pianist. I love playing drums, but I think I have music in my bones. I also played the violin for five or six years and although I don't play on the
album, I wrote three of the tracks.
How are you coping with the fame?
I don't think people realize how demanding a life it is. The schedule is crazy. It means a total death to your old life. I've moved away from home. I've got none of my family or friends around
What do you miss about your old life?
I miss my family. I miss my friends and playing cricket with my school buddies. I don't ever wish my life was different.
How did you feel when you won Australian idol?
I can't even put one emotion down. As soon as my name was called I though "Oh, my goodness, my life is going to be crazy" and "Oh my goodness, there foes my indoor cricket". Weird stuff. I had a million thoughts racing through my head.
What has been the strangest thing about becoming famous?
There had been so much weirdstuff. Getting the keys to the city of Tea Tree Gully in Adelaide was weird. And hanging out with the Black eyed peas at the MTV awards in Asia was surreal.
What did you think of "dicko" bagging the other idols?
It cuts you deeply. You're in such vulnerable position and people don't really realize hoe embarrassing it is. You're there, you've just done as well as you could have and it's like you're standing in front f a firing squad about o be shot.
Do you keep in touch with the other idols?
Yeah, I see then now and then. I'm really close to Levi and Shannon, and Millsy's part of the same record label. Courtney's done a single too, which is cool. Australian idol has been good- it's brought a lot of good talent out.
What do you do in your spare time?
I don't get much spare time, but I had a few days off recently in Adelaide and I finally got to go fishing, and I love indoor cricket, of course.
How was World idol different to Australian idol?
It was very different. It's just one performance to show who you are and what you're about, whereas idol here is a bout a journey and seeing different aspects of the people as a person and a personality.
