Perry's Idol buys
From Sydney Confidential
February 13, 2004
HE was here for just two days but Friends star Matthew Perry made a good impression on the city's inhabitants.
Matthew Perry takes in the sites at Bondi's Icebergs restaurants.
Taking an early lead in Confidential's annual Most Popular Visiting Celebrity, Perry was a true gentleman to all those he met.
Most importantly for Perry's post-sitcom career, he impressed director Chris Noonan with who he had several meetings for a role in an upcoming movie.
Noonan told Confidential yesterday that it was Perry who decided to fly to Sydney to pitch himself for the lead role in a romantic comedy currently under development.
The pair dined at Icebergs on Tuesday and met again at Perry's hotel on Wednesday to discuss the project, which remains under wraps.
"He wants to be a film actor and he's been in a few films but nothing that stood out. He really wants a good film role," Noonan said.
"He's a great guy. He read this script and just had to come and pitch himself for it.
"He's desperate to have the role."
Noonan, who directed Babe and earned an Oscar nomination for his efforts, said he signed on to direct this film about two years ago but was unable to reveal much about it yet.
It doesn't have a title but it does have the backing of Steven Spielberg and his studio Dreamworks.
A number of other actors have also been considered for the role.
Perry flew out of Sydney last night after enjoying a whirlwind trip, with much of his time spent in Bondi.
On Wednesday night he dined at Bondi Social with two women and then was later spotted at Will and Toby's, where he caught up with everywhere man Oscar Humphries.
Before flying out, Perry picked up two CDs from Bondi's Dirt Cheap CD emporium - Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll's albums.
We kid you not.
