Noll's in tune with his heart By PAUL STEWART 08feb04 SHANNON Noll, the country's latest No. 1 recording artist, has called for a better deal for rural Australians. Heartfelt: Shannon Noll and his Southern Cross tattoo. Picture: Tim Carrafa The former farmer has dedicated his new single, What About Me, to the people of the bush and those "living it tough on the land". "The song is really all about people who are being overlooked by big business," the Australian Idol runner-up said. "A lot of people in the bush, in fact everywhere, can relate to the words of the song. They are sick of being stomped on. "There are many people struggling out there. "Anything I can do to help promote the plight of country Australia, I am more than happy to lend my name to." Noll, who a few weeks ago was shearing sheep at his property at Condobolin in NSW, said being a pop star "sure beats digging up tree stumps". "I love farming -- don't get me wrong -- but it just got too business orientated, whereas it used to be a lifestyle," he said. "By the time I got to it, it had become a real business and that feeling of simply cruising about and working it out as you go was getting harder. "If you had one failed year at one crop, it put too much pressure on you for the next year." The singer admitted his late father probably would have preferred him to work the land than enter the entertainment business. Noll, a cousin of former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh, said his latest chart success justified his decision to leave his farm and give music a shot. "It did get to the stage where I had to decide if I was going to get into farming full time or go for the dream," he said. Noll also was delighted with news he would sing at the Allan Border Medal at Crown Palladium on Thursday. His new album is a mix of classic Australian rock -- think Jimmy Barnes, think the Choirboys -- and some sentimental ballads. First track on the album is the infectious Drive, written by Canadian rock star Bryan Adams. Noll said he was "truly proud" to be Australian and to prove it he had had the Southern Cross tattooed over his heart. www.heraldsun.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5478,8612046%255E2902,00.html

This was posted by Caregirl on the yahoo group:
On Friday after the big show in Adelaide and before he got on a flight to go to Melbourne for another big concert in the evening, he actually went out of his way to visit a hospital here in Adelaide to visit some patients. Unbelievable! There is an article in the Advertiser about it.
Don't have a scan of the photo, (will see if I can later, you have to see the look on his face, unbelievable smile as he is pushing a wheelchair with a little girl in it).
GUY PUTS CHEER INTO HEARTS OF CHILDREN.
It's hard to know who was more excited - the patients, the mums or nurses. Word of australian Idol Guy Sebastian's secret visit to the women's and Children's Hospital yesterday spread like doctors doing their rounds. The adolescent ward bulged with ring-ins from other wards, all clutching posters, cameras and autograph books.
The Advertiser's new gossip section 'Adelaide confidential' organised the drop-in after the hospital failed to get a response to its requests - made through Guy's record company BMG - to get a visit from the "Fro during the Idol tour. Sebastian was only too happy to stop by the wards after being approached by Confidential.
Guy, showing off his well-honed fashion sense, word his favourite brown beanie, prompting one patient to ask for a peek at the famous afro. Guy lifted his headwear only slightly, apologising, "it's pretty not "fro at the moment".
He stayed up oate with friends and family after the second Australian Idol concert on thursday and posing for photos on a lounge in the Brookman Ward yesterday, Guy asked "do you mind if I have a bit of a snooze here?"

i thought this was a pretty interesting article...thanks to sparklebeans3 for typing it up!
FEBRUARY EDITION - SAIN MAGAZINE - SANITY INSTORE MAGAZINE
ALL AUSSIE ICON
Plucked out of a country New South Wales farm and into this consciousness of an Australian Idol loving nation, Shannon Noll is coping with a "third big day of interviews" like a trouper. Charming and patient, Shannon is predictably as down-to-earth as a cold tinny. And why not when life is this good?
ARTICLE WRITTEN BY : SHANE ROBERT COOPER
No longer viewed as bridesmaid to Guy Sebastian's bridge, Shannon is smiling as he hits the charts with his own repertoire of songs. First up, of course, is his stirring cover of the Moving Pictures classic "What About Me". It hits all the right notes, indicating that this 27 year old Virgo might just have what it takes to make it in the music industry.
Still, the magnitude of his appeal remains a mystery to Shannon who believes fame is reserved for the likes of other people. "I think Russell Crow is famous; I'm just lucky enough to have gone well in a competition," he smiles. "I don't know about being famous, famous people have got money (laughs) and I haven't seen a great deal of that yet. I just get enough to get by but we’ll get there.”
Modesty aside, the father of two boys (Cody and Blake) admits he is slowly getting used to the stares and whispers when stepping outside his hotel foyer. “it’s not overbearing. I get people who do the whole ‘check 1-2-3’ before they realise it’s me standing next to them or whatever,” he says. “it’s not like I get stuck down the street for three hours. I get a lot of people telling me how much weight I’ve lost even though I haven’t lost any. They say TV puts on 10 kilos so they much be looking at me through goggles”.
“My biggest goal had always been to try and make a comfortable life from music. Are there any skeletons at the back of my closet? Nah, not that I can think of; I haven’t hit -and-run anyone or anything like that; maybe a rabbit or two on the side of the road!”
Considering the astonishing success of Guy’s debut single and album it’ll be natural for expectations in Shannon’s camp to be relatively high. After all, millions of people have voted each week for the country boy as he went tonsil-ton-tonsil against Paulini, Cosima and Millsey.
Shannon is hesitant to go down that path. “It raises hopes a little bit that my album might go alright, but Guy won so he should sell more than me, really (laughs). He’s got a larger fan base. I don’t expect to be breaking any records. I just want people to be happy with how it turned out.”
Compared to Guy’s rushed three-day recording session, Shannon had an enviable four and a half weeks to finalise his album. “They tell me it’s still a quick turnaround but I’m pretty happy with the style of songs on it. I can’t wait to see the type of reaction it gets from everyone.”
Some of the reaction, so far, has commented on the similarity between Shannon and another humble growler, Jimmy Barnes. It’s a comparison not lost on Shannon: “we’ve both got that gravely . . My vocal producer calls it ‘the afterburner’. He tells me when it’s time to light up my afterburner. I feel quite lucky because I can sing like that but I don’t have to sing like that all the time.”
He’s come a long way since singing as a cocky 14 year old at a mate’s wedding. As a lusty teenager, Shannon suddenly discovered girls love a bloke who can sing the latest Bryan Adams hits; plus it was definitely cheaper than buying then dinner (“that’s for sure!”). After hitting Sydney’s live pub scene with this brothers in cover rock band Cyprus, Shannon realised music was what he wanted to do in life. It wasn’t a difficult decision to audition for Australian Idol. “It it wasn’t for that show, right now I’d be driving a tractor or working at my grandfather’s, or something like that.”
Declaring he has no regrets about the Australian Idol experience, Shannon does wish producers could have handled Cosimas departure in a fairer manner. (Cosima left under medical advice). “They should have kept the three of us together before announcing Cosima was withdrawing from the competition. I don’t blame Cosima at all. She just got a bit crook at ht wrong time, which was sad for her.”
Another friend garnered during the Idol process - judge Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson - has this to say about Shannon: “From his first audition in Melbourne, I somehow knew Australia would love this boy. He had an earthiness and honesty about him that was so appealing. I had a sneaking suspicion he could go all the way. He progressed through to the final 40 ni solid style but it was on special Sunday evening when he performed his socks off and stole the hearts of the nation with his rendition of “WHAT ABOUT ME”. I truly believe it was that moment in time when Shannon was touched by stardom - this marked the beginning of what I feel will be a wonderful career.”
Speaking of all things idol, does Shannon agree with Dicko’s assertion that the World Idol winner looks like a hobbit? “Yeah. He’s got some mad looking stuff going on with his teeth (laughs). He can get that fixed pretty quickly. I watched World Idol and was disappointed for Guy because he was the only one who showed an ounce of character. Artists should make art rather than recreate someone else’s. Guy did his own arrangement and sang “What A Wonderful World” completely different, as opposed to everyone else who did straight cover versions. I mean, Will Young changed his version of “Light My Fire” but we won’t even talk about him. I’m asking all my assumptions based on the very ordinary way he treated Guy. I don’t think Guy deserved it. We all started in the same place.”
Well assuming a close and fulfilling relationship with Will is out of the picture, Shannon looks towards the future with enthusiasm and a touch of trepidation. I’m not one to make assumptions or count my chickens before they hatch. I don’t know, mate. Anytime I’ve been excited and told someone about it, it’s never taken off so I try not to jinx myself. I just hope I keep doing whatever it is that makes me happy.

Yes, Shannon does sound like a great guy. Will Young changed his version of “Light My Fire” but we won’t even talk about him. I’m asking all my assumptions based on the very ordinary way he treated Guy. I don’t think Guy deserved it. We all started in the same place.”
hmmm, the plot thickens!

thanks to joh!
Direct from paris 'millsy' arrived in Adleaide during the week and showed he isn't about to shed his playboy image.
Along with the other australian idol stars, rob, enjoyed among other things - lunch at Penfolds Magil Estate.
Those hoeing into the retaurants fine cuisine included the top ratings show controversial judge dicko, adelaides national winner guy, courtney act and shannon whose fiancee rochelle had left theirs sons with her parents in melbourne to join the national tour for a few days.
The gang were in fine spirits and more than happy to offer a glimpse of the busy and glam lives.
Ladies man millsy a drawcard whever he goes revealed he hasn't spoken to paris his ex lover for some time. I don't keep in touch with my flings he smiled.
Buy watch out girls, millsys roving eye had been working overtime since he hit town. I'm a a big fan of adelaide girls he said, I went to crazy horse (strip joint in adelaide btw) the other night and you should see the girls there. One woman had boobs as big as shannons head. We had a bit of a chat and she is coming to see the show. I've organised backstage passes for her kids.
The more sedate Guy was happy to be home but said contrary to his earlier reported plans that he won't be back permanently for some time. He just moved into an apartment near Bondi.
"I've signed a 12 months lease but I havn't been home and just sat on my couch and watched tv for months" he said "I need to be in Sydney for all my business but I'd love to come back....in about a year and buy a house.
While Guy didn't have time to visit his mates at the Paradise Community Church, he was happy his family and friends made it to the idol concert. he revealed he'll be heading to Asia to present a gong at its MTV awards next month where he'll also perfom a showcase of songs for record execs....
Shannon and Dicko recently joined the tattoo craze both getting the southern cross inked into the bodies in perth. Shannon is on his chest while dickos has gone for the more traditional bicep Shannon meanwhile has leased out his Condo farm for a while and have moved to Mosman on sydneys leafy north shore. Rochelle cannot wait to spend time there once Shannon promo work is done. It's been fun but it's been hard Rochelle said It will be nice to be normal again.
Dicko was in high spirits during lunch, learning that morning by phone that his Australian residency had just received approval. I'm finally a fully fledged aussie he cheered as the gang raised there glasses in celebration.
In fact dicko looked liked he was enjoying he new "star" status more than any of the idol cast and crew. I've been in this business for 20 years and have done many tours but not from this side he said
It's so different because when I was on tour I had a lot of responsiblilty. Now I have none and there's always a Tarago waiting downstairs. At age 40 for rock stardom to descend on me is too bizarre for words....

What Will sang was Jose Feliciano's version of "Light my fire" which was also a big hit in the late 60's in America. I guess Shannon didn't hear the South African judge correcting those who thought Will changed "the Doors" song himself - that its Jose's. (or maybe they didn't show you guys the South African guy's comment like they did in America)

thanks to buzz!
Nova Out of Order Aired 8/2/04 AndyG: …my absolute pleasure. It’s been a whirlwind time for u. Did u eva think this was all going to happen? G: No, not at all, I never thought that. I mean, I’d always wanted to be a singer but I kinda always had in the back of my mind, y’kno, I better study hard, better get some backup behind me, so I kinda concentrated a lot thru school with my study more than anything else & um, still love singing, & used to sing at church & with other bands & stuff like that & so yeah; it’s just fantastic to be here & do what I love & actually do it as a job. Not many ppl get to do that…I’m just so stoked.
AndyG: Kay, the new single AINIY. What can you tell us about it? G: Well this, AINIY is quite uptempo, it’s very happy. I would say this is much more a pop song & I’m really happy about that. I’ve never been just devoted to just RnB or devoted to just one genre & my album signifies that – it’s quite RnB and pop ‘n stuff, so it’s um, yeah! AndyG: Now I’ve never really heard you say a bad word about anyone, so I’m going to ask you this: how do u feel about Shannon’s single doing so well? Guy: It’s like when your friend succeeds you’re just happy for ‘em & the fact that we’ve both had success is just – u couldn’t find (?) anything more. But I guess there’s always gonna be that thing cos it was a comp & although Shannon & I weren’t rivals y’kno, ppl did see us in that way. It’s not a matter of competing with each other, it’s a matter of providing options for ppl to go y’kno – some ppl love that sort of music, some ppl hate both our music! (laughs) So u can’t please everybody, u just gotta do ur best & um, yeah, I’m just providing an option I guess to listen to and enjoy.
AndyG: I’m loving ur new single AINIY…Thanks so much for coming in Guy Guy: My pleasure. Thanks for having me.

(*waits for a UK person to jump to Wills defence...*)

Dressing for Success
Dressing Mark Phillipoussis, Guy Sebastian and Amiel is all in a day's work for Diesel Jeans' Roxy Jacenko.
As the company's marketing director, part of her job is to supply stars with the upmarket clothing label to wear in fashion parads, advertising campaigns and on television. "I organise the product placement for four brands under the Diesel umbrella, "Ms Jacenko said. "For example, in the Pepsi campaign Guy Sebastian is wearing a blue velvet Diesel suit" He was also wearing Diesel on Australian Idol."
