SIGNED with a love heart and a smiley face with a 'fro, Australian idol Guy Sebastian has pushed back the opening of the new Flinders St East by two weeks in a letter to "the people of Queensland".
The afro-coiffed singing sensation this week wrote to Townsville Mayor Tony Mooney to ask that the hugely anticipated celebrations -- originally planned for February 15 -- be pushed back to February 29.
Sebastian wrote he had to postpone his northern foray to appear at the MTV Asia Awards, which are considered one of the few international star-maker events with a television audience in excess of 300 million.
"Due to my commitments to my record company, I am obligated to fulfil their expectations in relation to appearances such as these music awards," Sebastian wrote.
"This scheduling clash is regrettable but I am pleased that I won't miss the celebrations in Townsville as a result."
Townsville City Council spokesman Dolan Hayes said Sebastian had sought the council's approval to change the date for the street party.
"While we had a contract in place, there were no significant issues or costs to council involved in changing the dates to assist Guy and we thought it would be the right thing to do," he said.
Mr Hayes said the phenomenal response received to the promotion of Sebastian's performance in the city meant changing the date rather than seeking another guest performer was the best option.
"We could go ahead without Guy but it would be a big disappointment to a lots of people in Townsville," he said.
Sebastian said he could not wait to meet all his supporters in Queensland and asked Townsville for its patience and understanding.
Mr Hayes said the major sponsors of the event and Flinders St East traders were supportive of the change.
