Here's my review after downloading the mp3s from all-idol.com.
Diana (One Voice): She was really good! She emoted for the first time and sounded so youthful and plaintive in the beginning.. it was very touching. She saved herself with this performance (I thought it would be between John and her!). She hits a couple of off-pitch notes in the middle, but her final glory note is amazing- light, clear and effortless (compared to all the rest of the divas anyway). She's started to grow, and I hope she keeps growing.
George (Trying To Get That Feeling Again): Eek. I heard he had a sore throat for this one (nooooooo, not the nodules!!), but the arrangement was a little too flowery. He began slightly off pitch, corrected the pitch in the middle, but lost the pace, then lost both pitch and pace at the end. Not good. If he'd been in time, the middle of the song would have been absolutely dreamy. I keep listening to it (you need a few listens to get over the confusion), then stopping it before it hits the last 30 seconds.
Fantasia (It's A Miracle): This was disappointing after last week, but it would have been very hard to top or equal last week. The song was nothing special... energetic, and well sung, but that was it. It's not really her fault, as it's not a song you can do much with besides energise people. She brought it home very nicely though (but be prepared for more yeah yeah yeahs .
Jennifer (Weekend in New England): Her voice is simply amazing - when she sings softly, it's the most beautiful voice of them all. The last half was destroyed because it was overdramatic and incredibly loud. When you turned the volume down though, she hit every single note perfectly. So I'm very impressed, even if I didn't like it too much.
Jasmine (I'll Never Love This Way Again): The first half is lovely and very velvety, but she loses her way about half way through.. The first runthrough of the chorus is fantastic, then I think her lungs just can't take the belting through the rest of the song because she goes flat. It's a little painful listening to her trying to hit the highest notes near the end. I wish she'd stop choosing love ballads.
LaToya (All The Time): The first three quarters was absolutely gorgeous. The last quarter was painful screaming. But she hit all the notes and built the drama better than Jennifer did. It's weird that she connects on the softer notes (it's the mum effect - she sounds so tender , but then loses me at the climax.
John S (Mandy): He had some trouble hitting the high note correctly, but the first half was good. There are moments of greatness there (traces of emotion)... but he does need to let loose. He needs to learn to hold the notes at the end of the lines as well, instead of trailing them off. But he was severely outclassed by everyone except George and Jasmine that week.
My winner: Diana, for improving the most . She wasn't the best, but she is going forward, whereas everyone else is either going backwards, or doing the same old thing.
Oh, the other winner is Guy of course! ;D
