American Idol By Jackie Chowns January 25, 2004 American Idol Ten 6.30pm Sunday After the phenomenal success of Australian Idol, Channel Ten is hedging its bets on the American show pinning us to our couches just as much. This is the third series of the American version, series one and two having made huge stars in the US of Kelly Clarkson (who was the unsuccessful favourite to win World Idol) and Ruben Studdard, the latter winning in a series that attracted 38 million viewers. If watching a bunch of American Beyonce wannabes compete isn't your thing, this series will be worth watching for the appearance of infamous judge and BMG executive Simon Cowell alone. The original hard-man judge, Cowell, who will be familiar to Australian audiences for his rough rebuffs and painful critiques on the World Idol panel, will hold his own against the thankfully more sympathetic judges in the form of singer Paula Abdul and producer Randy Jackson. www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/01/23/1074732589580.html
