I really enjoyed the first episode tonight. It's ashame they are down to 75 already! I thought they could have shown a lot more of these initial auditions over several episodes like popstars.
I was disappointed that they mainly only showed the extremes. I.e. the ones that would get through, and the really bad ones. I would have been more interested to see more of the middle range - and if the judges were just as cruel to those people.
Unfortunately it seems like we might land up with a winner like the UK one - singing some boring ballad. Yawn. But anyway, it was a good start and look forward to the rest of the series.

Couldnt agree with the above comments more. :oWhy did you call Australian Idol, when you should have called it Australian Idiots. I understand great viewing entails showing the BAD talents, so the judges can make fun of them, but what about the real talent, those awesome voices & personalities that made it (or almost made it) through to the finals. I know many people that lined up for hours got through to 2nd & 3rd stages, and you didnt show ANYTHING of these people waiting to be discovered or get some spotlight. It was either the people that got through, or those that were ULTRA TERRIBLE, its a shame you took the easy option of cheesy Television, rather than being a cutting-edge show you advertised. Maybe you could have an AUSTRALIAN IDOL SPECIAL FOR EACH STATE! Eg Victoria Viewers get to see more of Victoria's trials/finals etc. Come on, theres more than just STARS & THE DRUDGE that were there to waste everyone's time, there was real talent that should be recognised.

I thought it was a really good episode!!! Those judges though, at times were funny, but majourity of the time were as*sholes, commenting on people's looks to such a horrible extent, when none of them are good looking themselves.
i would have found it interesting if someone auditioned singing one of marcia's songs.... she woulda flipped!

Yeah Daniel, a state-by-state special would have been much better. I mean, how many thousand auditioned at Sydney?? - and we see the top 5 and bottom 5, and 1 other or something - woohoo.
Maybe they'll show some of this on the Channel [V] "extra" show.

Yeah cristella a few girls did to marsha songs and they she didnt think much of it. I got into the top 40 in melbourne auditions and saw extremely talented people. Yet last nights show all they did was show crap. As an auditioner I waited 3 hours in the cold. then 7 hours inside the building to audition once get through and audition a second time then. Audition in front of channel 10 camera's get a good wrap from the judges but still there was nothing to show of the talent I saw at the last melbourne auditions. Last night I sat around the tv with a few of the ones that made it through to sydney and top 40 and we were all apalled with what was shown and what wasn't being apart of the great Australian Idol Journey!!!

Yeah, I don't understand how they made such a big thing about these MASSIVE lines of people auditioning. Then show like 10.

Complete crap!! I am surprised they even managed to find 100 now 75. All the boys sounded like boppers from boy bands and the girls all sounded like Britney wannabes, where is the talent?!? There must be more to Australian Idol than this. I certainly won't be wasting my Sunday nights with this bullshit.

I don't think all the girls sounded like Britney wannabe's. They seemed to be more stronger voiced ballad style people, rather than teeny pop.

Contestants need constructive criticism not destructive
Watching the show, I felt for every contestant. I was glad that I'm an accounts clerk and if I stuff up, it's just between me and the computer and I can easily rectify the problem. I can't sing to save my life, and I learnt it early on, so I don't go out there.
There was quite a lot of talent on the show, so out of the three judges, I felt that only Marcia gave the most constructive criticism. The guys just got stuck into them. With Marcia, they walked away with their dignity intact. When the guys gave a comment, it was as subtle as a sledgehammer. I was Mark's biggest fan in the 70's, I had pictures of him everywhere when I was 10. I was disappointed in his approach now to these hapless contestants whose whole life's dream is resting on these auditions.
As for Ian, I don't even know who he is. I felt some of his comments were a bit below the belt. Sure there is a need to makes sure these young people keep things in perspective with their dream of becoming a superstar. They have a lot of work ahead of them, but I am sure they know that. Every singer, even the legends we respect, sounded raw in the beginning when they started.
All I'm asking is to give these young people a go. If they don't measure up, let them know without stripping them of their pride. They are worthwhile human beings. Not qualifying for this competition shouldn't make them want to slash their wrists.
If the criticisms they will get in future are worse,(if that is possible), perhaps the music industry needs to rethink it's approach to identifying talent. We already have an unacceptably high rate of youth alcoholism, drugs and suicide. Let's give our young their self- respect back.
Someone gave you judges a chance when you started out. Think about that.

Initial auditions misrepresented
Now don't get me wrong i love the show but does anyone else think the initial auditions were a bit misrepresented? I auditioned in Brisbane and you didn't actually audition for the judges at first. That was the 2nd stage. You auditioned for the shows producers and if they passed you, you were allowed to audition for Marcia, Mark and Dicko the next day. After watching the first episode I was really upset that they tried to pass off the 2ND ROUND of auditions as the first round. I was also majorly disappointed at the CRAP that they allowed to go through to this round. There were 100s of better singers I heard on the audition day that missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime because the producers let puff the magic dragon and the warbling lady take their place. Oh well, that's showbiz I guess. Any opinions? -Alicia (world's biggest idol fan)

WOW!! I can't believe some of the rubbish the shows producers let through, then. Seriously...what were they thinking??

They're producers - they were thinking RATINGS obviously!! Seriously, would you blame them?! That's there job.
> Initial auditions misrepresented I didn't like how the TV show didn't make it clear that there was stage 1 and 2.
And Administrator, I sort of agree with what you said, but also don't. The music business is highly competitive and ruthless (which is why I am studying in a completely different area). So why should the judges give a false impression to these people the people in the business are caring and helpful? If the singers are determined enough, they'll be able to get past the hurdles themselves.

Clarification-
The reply headed "Contestants need constructive criticism not destructive" were the comments of Patti from the Official Australian Idol Yahoo Group, and were not the opinions of Inside Australian Idol or the administrator of this board.
